The Vodacom Blue Bulls will be looking to step up a gear when they host the Golden Lions in Pretoria on Saturday.
The Blue Bulls followed up their hard fought away draw with Province with a grinding 9 point victory over the Griquas in week 2. The game never really got going from an entertainment point of view and while the Blue Bulls will take the 4 log points they will know that improvement is needed going forward. The squad has been hit by a spate of injuries with Jean Cook, Frik Kirsten and Callie Visagie all confirmed as non starters for the Lions game.
The Lions have yet to register a win and followed up their narrow home loss against the Cheetahs with an 8 point defeat to the Sharks in Durban. In fairness to them they probably deserved more out of the game and for long periods looked like they might cause an upset. The team from Johannesburg will be desperate to get a win under their belts to stay in the hunt for the playoffs.
Head to Head
The Lions have an excellent recent record against the Blue Bulls in Pretoria winning by 9 points in both 2012 and 2011. In 2010 the men in blue edged a close one 24-21.
The Blue Bulls did win in Johannesburg last season recording a convincing 50-29 victory towards the back end of the season.
The Blue Bulls passage to the playoffs was never likely to be smooth as they are missing a host of Bok players and this season has a number of injuries as well. I thought they might struggle against WP but they impressed in grabbing a draw. However, aside from the fact that it was a win there are not that many positives to take out of the Griquas game.
www.voltbet.com has made the Blue Bulls narrow favourites to win this and I am in agreement as I don’t expect to see much between these sides at the final whistle. The Lions as mentioned above are desperate and they play a style that can be very hard to contain as the match goes on and legs get tired.
I think we are in for another edge of your seat finish and am taking the home team to edge it by 1-5 points in a far more entertaining match than what we had to sit through last Friday night.
Prediction: Blue Bulls win by 1-5 points
