The Vodacom Bulls team of 2014 will be full of new and youthful energy, but it will be a team very aware of the winning culture that has made the Pretoria side the most successful local team in the last decade of the Vodacom Super Rugby competition.
According to the Vodacom Bulls captain, Pierre Spies, there will be constant reminders to the achievements of the past, which saw the Bulls winning this coveted title three times and play in numerous semi-finals, the last of which was in 2013.
“We have lost a number of senior players and that was not ideal, but the benefit of that is that a new energy and heaps of young potential has now come into the side,” Spies told Pieter Jordaan of Rapport.
“It is nice to work with youngsters that are so keen to learn. It is a benefit not always appreciated.”
On a personal level, Spies indicated that he is well rested after a torn bicep ruled him out of rugby since June 2013.
“I am certainly well rested en managed to spend a lot of time with the family. The downside of injury is that you miss out on actually playing rugby. I am hungry to play and want to use all that energy and motivation in 2014,” he said.
Spies will not only have to inspire the younger players, but will have to make sure that the more experienced players in his side fire as well.
Despite this responsibility, he wants to enjoy the game in 2014.
“Hopefully I will be able to enjoy my rugby this year, but make no mistake, I will still try to be the best player in my position. Rugby is all about constantly improving your game,” he said.
“So I will be keen to have a great season for the Bulls and if needed, the Springboks too.”
