The Vodacom Bulls opened their home campaign in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition on a positive note, beating the Lions 25-17 at a wet Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. It was the Bulls first win of the 2014 competition, following two away defeats in the opening two weeks.
The visitors outscored the Vodacom Bulls by two tries to one in a match that was dominated by the boot in difficult conditions, but the home side did enough in the end to secure a valuable four log points.
The Bulls hit the front early on with two penalties from the boot of flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter, but the Lions took the lead soon afterwards when centre Stefan Watermeyer charged a Jurgen Visser clearance down to go over for the opening try, reports rugby365.co.za
The Bulls responded with a try of their own from Jan Serfontein after a fluid movement which saw flyer Bjorn Basson find some space on the outside.
The Lions added to their tally with a Marnitz Boshoff penalty, but Potgieter slotted a penalty and drop-goal of his own to give the home side a 19-10 lead at the break.
Opportunities were few and far between in a scrappy second half and the first points came from a Potgieter penalty just after the hour mark.
That left the Lions 12 points adrift, and they needed something special in the final stages to get back into the game, but it was not to be as another Potgieter penalty put the Bulls out of touch.
The Lions got a late consolation when replacement Willie Wepener got another charge-down try, but it was not enough to secure a bonus point as they finished eight points behind.
Man of the match: Flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter showed the Bulls what they had been missing in their first two games as he controlled the game superbly and asked questions of the Lions throughout.
