UP Tuks are the 2014 Carlton Cup winners. They overcame Pretoria Police 35-13 in the final played at Loftus B on Saturday, reports Johanna de Vos.
Tuks lost their fiery number seven flanker Pieter Griesel within minutes of the game. He was given a red card by the referee Stefan Geldenhuys for a high and dangerous tackle. This incident motivated the students so much that they ran havoc among the Bobbies.
With only 14 players for the rest of the game they played with so much fire that the spectators soon forgot there was one Tukkie missing. They were constantly on the attack and quickly defused any plans or moves the Bobbies would make.
At half-time the students had already scored two tries (13-3). They were in charge the whole 80 minutes and never looked like losing this final.
Strangely on the day both fly-halves and other relacement kickers missed several kicks to the goal-posts. Police missed 5 kicks and Tuks missed 6 kicks. Must have been nerves.
Tuks’ scrum-half Emile Temperman is worth mentioning. He was a real general and had a very big influence on the game. He will be an asset to any Provincial team.
The last minute try by Tuks’ left winger Andries Kruger was a jewel as he sprinted nearly 100 metres from one try-line to the other. He side-stepped and swerved as he out-ran the would-be tacklers.
