De Jager to start first match for Vodacom Bulls

New signing Lood de Jager will make his first appearance for the Vodacom Bulls against the Chiefs in Brisbane on Thursday, after being named in the squad that face the New Zealand team in a Vodacom Super Rugby friendly at the Ballymore Stadium.

De Jager, who moved from the Toyota Cheetahs, will form a lock combination with RG Snyman in a team that will also see the return to Bulls colours for Jacques Potgieter, who won the Super Rugby title with the Waratahs a couple of years back.

Handré Pollard is also taking the field for the first time in more than a year and will lead the side, Jesse Kriel was named at fullback and Trevor Nyakane will start at tighthead in the match against the Chiefs.

"We don't have much time left in the pre-season, so it will be important for certain combinations to work well in this match," Vodacom Bulls coach, Nollis Marais, said.
"The Chiefs are a formidable team and this will be an important match to see where we are at this early in the season."

The squad to take on the Chiefs is: Jesse Kriel, Travis Ismaiel, Dries Swanepoel, Burger Odendaal, Jamba Ulengo, Handre Pollard (c), Rudy Paige, Hanro Liebenberg, Jacques Potgieter, Nic de Jager, Lood de Jager, RG Snyman, Trevor Nyakane, Jaco Visagie, Pierre Schoeman. Bench: Edgar Maruthlule, Lizo Gqoboka, Jason Jenkins, Ruan Steenkamp, Piet van Zyl, Tian Schoeman, Warrick Gelant, John-Roy Jenkinson, Jacobie Adriaanse, Renaldo Bothma, Francois Brummer, JT Jackson.

    Good side...

I would have pretty much picked the same, except Steenkamp to start instead of Nic de Jager.

How long is Roelof Smit out for? No doubt our best open-sider...

Hope the guys have a good 'hit out' and that the combinations will start to gel... Important to start the season strong!!

I think the physical presence and experience of Lood and Jacque Potgieter will stand us in good stead once we hit the Stormers in the first game...

Going to be tough at Newlands, but we have to deliver there... It's very important for this team to start believing that they can beat strong opposition away from home

    Let's play!!

  2. gravatar Bulperd says:
Am I missing something? Rudy Paige "REALY, REALY" how many times must he prove he is the weakest skrumhalve in the country. Last games for the Bulle and for the Springboks he was poor - slow and wouldn't made my 3th team. The last game against Wales when Piet went up we suddenly looked much better but it was just too late. One of these days we going to hear Ivan v Zyl going overseas and Piet v Zyl. If I must play third fiddle to a guy I know is not better than me "in fact way worse" I wouldn't waste my time here either and go earn euro's
Rest of the team OK although I would played Ronaldo Bothma no 8 in place of Hanro
  3. gravatar cr says:
Ons kort nou nog net 'n ordentlikke skrumskakel.
  4. gravatar Blue Bull says:
Question is where will Nollis play Jesse Consistently: full back or outside centre. Galant's kicking game and defense needed some development when I last saw him in Cape Town last year. Ditto with Jesse. Both are very dangerous attackers. Jesse's international experience might count in his favour.

Great to see stalwards like Ronaldo Bothma, Jacques Potgieter and Lood up front. We have some hard men in the pack. I also think Ruan Steenkamp is far better than Nic de Jager at 6.

But the big question of the year, if the Bulls would like to have any say in play off chances: how fit and ready will Pollard be?

I prefer to see what Ivan van Zyl can do.

My hopes for this tour is zero injuries, lots of good preparation away from home and two starting victories on the trot against Stormers and Cheetahs.
  5. gravatar Jacques says:
Hope Pollard stays injury free Still think the Bulls need a proper tight head. Steenkamp better than Nic de Jager. Paige not on standard.
  6. gravatar Slim182 says:
I think the Bulls should retire the nr. 9 jersey for the season in memory of Joost.
  7. gravatar robbo says:
I think Paige is a pretty decent half back but it is hard to be effective behind a pack that's consistently going backwards, Hall had the same trouble at the blues last year and will be far more potent behind the crusaders pack full of all blacks. I think the bulls will be much better this year, with pollard back and jesse in the 15 jersey where he was outstanding a few seasons ago. the bulls are always one of my favorite SA teams to watch, even when they play at 3 or 5am in NZ
