It is no secret that Loftus Versfeld has a knack for developing world class locks with the Vodacom Bulls boasting the likes of Lood de Jager, RG Snyman and Jason Jenkins.
19-year-old Ruben van Heerden has stepped up to the plate in the absence of the senior locks and he has not set a foot wrong. Born in Alberton and schooled across the road at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Van Heerden may be young but he is by no means green.
His raw talent is in such abundance that he has already represented the Vodacom Blue Bulls at U19, U21, Currie Cup Qualifiers, Super Sport Rugby Challenge and Currie Cup level despite only finishing school in 2015.
2017 has been good to Van Heerden as he made his Vodacom Super Rugby debut off the bench against the Southern Kings while he scored two tries for the Junior Springboks at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Georgia and if this season is anything to go by than higher honours for the young lock is inevitable.
