Francois Hougaard

Francois Hougaard

He arched his back in typical fashion and when Vodacom Blue Bulls scrumhalf Francois Hougaard did put on the after burners, it was a desperate couple of Leopards defenders that was left in his wake as he waltzed in to score a memorable try at Olën Park.
Hougaard is used to scoring tries – who will forget his memorable effort in the Super 14 final – but even for him and his high standards, the Potchefstroom effort was one for the top drawer.

Hougaard pounced on a crooked Leopards line out throw, saw a gap and outsprinted the opposition with a great turn of speed.

The scrumhalf knows that similar efforts will be needed against the Western Province on Saturday. "Victories do give you confidence going onto the next game," Hougaard said, adding: "But you can't keep looking back to the past week. Every week is a new game and come Monday we go and work hard to improve and fix the errors we made the week before."

The 22-year-old Hougaard, who started in South Africa's last three Tri-Nations Tests, admitted that the extended run at scrumhalf, after almost a full Super Rugby season on the wing, is great for his game.

"This is the position I prefer, and it is great to have a run of games in the No.9 jersey," he told rugby365.com. "The more you play the better you get, so having regular game time at scrumhalf is to my benefit and helps me build confidence," Hougaard added.
