Gerhard van den Heever

Gerhard van den Heever

It took him almost two months, but the Vodacom Blue Bulls try machine, Gerhard van den Heever, finally got back on the road to try-scoring.
As it was with his previous effort – on August 6th against the Leopards – it was a brilliant individual effort by the speedster that got him over the line for his fifth try in the Absa Currie Cup season.

Against the Leopards, he had to burn his opponents during a 50 meter run after a line-out move, but this time he had to use some other skills and not only speed to beat the opponents.

He chipped over Griquas full back, Riaan Viljoen, at full speed and then raced Bjorn Basson to the line. It looked as if he was left behind by the flying Griqua, but Van den Heever anticipated the bounce of the ball so much better than his opponent and scored.

"It is not my first try like that this year. I deliberately kicked the ball that way, expecting it to bounce back to me and as a result did not sprint flat-out after it. Bjorn did, the ball bounced over his head and into my arms as I expected," Van den Heever said.

"It was a great feeling to score again, as it is part of my job as a wing to score tries." Van den Heever has high regard for Basson.

"He is a good opponent and very quick." On whom he sees as the fastest rugby player in the country the former hurdler has the following advice. "I think they should line us up and let us race. That is the only way we will know."
