It was important for the Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-21 side to bounce back from their unexpected defeat to the Border Bulldogs team in their opening match of the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship, but they faced a very tough opponent in the Golden Lions at Loftus B on Friday.

Thanks to Ulrich Beyers though, the Blue Bulls could secure a much needed and confidence boosting win over the visitors.

The outside centre had to take over the kicking duties for the team after regular pivot Tony Jantjies was injured and did not play in the match.

His first effort in the sixth was pulled wide, but after that, Beyers found his range. Penalties in the 15th, 35th and 40th minutes kept his team in the hunt after the visitors scored a break-away try and lead 16-9 at the break.

In the second half, Beyers converted Jan Serfontein's try in the 46th minute and then kicked penalties in the 52nd, 65th, 72nd and 75th minutes, with the latter the match clincher, securing a 28-25 win.
