Hougaard extends stay at Vodacom Bulls
20 April 2012

The Vodacom Bulls have secured the signature of the most sought-after player in South Africa on Thursday when they signed Francois Hougaard till 2015. The versatile back, who played his 35 Super Rugby matches and 15 test matches at wing and scrumhalf, committed himself to the Vodacom Bulls till the end of the 2015 Super Rugby season.

Hougaard’s explosiveness, strength and versatility makes him a very valuable player in any team and the Vodacom Bulls and South Africa will no doubt benefit tremendously from the decision by the 24 year old player to continue his rugby career in South Africa and Pretoria in particular.

He had numerous big money offers from all over the world to consider.

Hougaard said it was an easy decision to stay.

“This is where it all really started for me and in the last four years I have worked very hard in the structures to establish myself in the side. I put a very high premium on hard work and the work ethic at the Bulls is something I feel very comfortable with. I know how hard not only the players, but the coaching staff, work to achieve results.”

He said the possible departure of senior coaches has not influenced his decision.

“They deserve to be called to the Springboks. Like players, coaches also have ambitions to be involved at the Springboks and I am very happy that they could realise their dreams. They deserve to be rewarded for their hard work.”

He also feels humbled to step into a senior leadership role at the Bulls.

“It will be an honour to lead by example and continue the ethos of hard work and dedication. I feel very proud to be associated with the Bulls.”

Vodacom Bulls head coach Frans Ludeke was a very pleased man.

“This is exactly what we needed in a time of uncertainty with personnel. Hougie is world class, there is no doubt about that and to know that he is prepared to put his trust in us, is a massive boost for the franchise. He shares our vision with regards to achievement and success and I am sure he will be massively influential in our drive to be the leading force in Super Rugby.”

Hougaard’s agent Craig Livingstone said his client had numerous offers to consider.

“Those offers showed the quality and the class of Francois. He is one of the most exiting players in world rugby and I am glad we have concluded a very lucrative contract for him at the Bulls. Not only is he a top player, but he has the X-factor too.”
