Vodacom Bulls announce touring squad
24 April 2012

The Vodacom Bulls named their squad of 26 players to travel to Australia next week for Super Rugby tour matches against the Rebels, Waratahs, Highlanders and Chiefs.

Included in the squad, who has all played Super Rugby this season, is Willie Wepener and Deon Stegmann, with both returning from a long layoff.

Stegmann, who injured his hamstring in week two against the Cheetahs, will have to pass a fitness test before travelling. Should he not make it, his rehabilitation will continue in Pretoria and he will then join the squad as soon as he is passed fit.

Wepener is suffering from Gamsay Hunt syndrome, a virus that attacked his facial muscles, but his condition has improved to such an extent that he will be able to tour with the team. He last played against the Reds in week four.

Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said the four matches will determine their season.

“We are in a good spot at the moment. We have no serious injury concerns and will travel with some momentum after the last win over the Brumbies. The bye was also a good one and the players were able to refresh mentally. We will need to win on the road though if we want to stay in the hunt for the play-off position.”

The squad is:

Zane Kirchner, Akona Ndungane, Bjorn Basson, JJ Engelbrecht, Wynand Olivier, Francois Venter , Johann Sadie, Louis Fouché, Morné Steyn, Jano Vermaak, Francois Hougaard, Pierre Spies (c), Arno Botha, Deon Stegmann, Jacques Potgieter, CJ Stander, Juandré Kruger, Wilhelm Steenkamp, Flip van der Merwe, Werner Kruger, Dean Greyling, Frik Kirsten, Dawie Steyn, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Bongi Mbonambi, Willie Wepener.

The Bulls fixtures on tour are:

May 4th: Rebels, AAMI Park, Melbourne

May 11th: Waratahs, Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney

May 19th: Highlanders, Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin

May 25th: Chiefs, Waikato Stadium, Hamilton

Milestones:

?Morné Steyn is due to play his 100th Super Rugby clash for the Vodacom Bulls on May 19th, should he be picked for the two Australian matches prior to the Highlanders clash. Steyn debuted in against the Crusaders in Pretoria in 2005. He will become the sixth player from the franchise to play 100 matches.

Lekkerbloe and FRANNABUL - you know what actually happen to Brummer - he was one of the best "bench sitter" Hy het sy "g..te op die bank warm gesit" thanks to the coached. Now you know want happen in the head a young player that sitting Saturday for Saturday on the bench. Easy THEY LOOSE CONFIDENCE DUE TO LACK OF GAME TIME If suddenly they get a litter bite of playing time 5 – 10 min perhaps 15 min they go out on the field trying to prove themselves – the more try try the more the fail. I bet you put anyone of the best rugby player on the bench for the time Brummer was on the bench and it will happen to them to. Hi Stapper oumaat – waar is jy?

Baie Sterkte Bulle!

#54 Loftus - bedoel jy dalk intensiteit?

Lekkerblou en Muzi - Sorry to say this most if not all the inside centre's will struggle to get the backline going. The reason is the MS is not attacking the line and WO or any other centre must play to deep - that why it looks like the Bulle backline is cut-off. If MS attack the line then he will stop the oppisition and only them can an inside centre make the call. Just look at Goosen he is doing it 100%. That why the Bulls backline was runing with the ball when Louis was palying in the CB. To correct this the inside centre must make the call.

@ Lekkerblou Bud Olivier is 1 dimensional he thrives with go forward ball and i have been saying that for the past 4 years.I am just stating the obvious against the Brumbies he was shut down because he is not an instictive centre. That is why he has struggled in a bok jersey.
Soon the Future and Present will be Venter and Serfontein !

FRANNABUL - The test for speed, power and strenght is not: how fast you can run, or how many you can bench - but: Wha are the quickest over the first 40m and then 60m, power how quickly you can lift the weight above you head and lastly how many time you can push a specific weight

Remember how many time will a rugby player run 100m on a rugby field.

I am game - lets try to get the information.

Sorry guys my mistake i just saw Venter is with the group.
@QFRANNABUL Francois Venter will be a bok soon even Meyer said so two years ago why???because he is an attacking 12 not a 1 Dimensional centre.
Venter is the best Under 21 centre in SA when he was 16 his father sent him to the Marruy Mexted Academy he was nearly lost to South African rugby.Mexted wanted to keep him in New Zealand.
When he gets older he will bulk up and grow at 12.He is the future star for SA rugby mark my words Olivier's days are numbered Venter and Serfontein have arrived and they are hungry for some action.
No disrespect to Wynand Olivier he has been a great servant for Bulls rugby he does not link up with saide or j-j-j.He would do well at outside centre now.
Bulls supporters the game has changed Olivier would have been a factor 3 years ago.He will be a marked man on tour.
Do yourselves a favour keep an eye out for Jan Serfontein Boelie's son what a player he oozes class.

A predictable group with lots of talent a bit suprised at three hookers wouldnt Bongi Mbonambi be better off playing in the vodacom cup and i think as much as i am a Morne fan if his kicking is off in the next game bring Louis Fouche in straight away instead of waiting he is a very good player and i agree with Muzi Wynand is becoming to predictable play Francois Venter ...I also dont see what Ludike is talking about when he sais we are keeping our momentum i hope he isnt talking about the last 20 min of the Brumbies game where we were all holding our breath ..another 3minutes and we would have lost my only hope is that in this time off we concentrated on defence ...GO BULLE

If we want to win the Super 15 then we have to urgently fix that terrible defence, inconsistent scrums and our predictable backline moves with the centres.
The Crusaders,Chiefs and Sadly the men from Brokeback Mountain the Stormers are the main contenders this year because they do not give away silly penalties and tries.

@nou-vir-die-blou
Very disappointed with Ludeke I completely agree with you Francois Venter is in Heyneke Meyer's future plan for the Boks he is highly rated yet he can not even find a spot on the bench???????
In fact Venter and Serfontein are the best junior centres at the Bulls and that's a fact.
I've watched Venter since high school at Grey College and last year in the currie cup he was great with ball in hand often breaking the line with such ease.Just because he had a bad game against the blues now we have lost confidenbce in him.
All we get from Olivier every weekend is crash, crash not linking up with the 13 and no passing???? very predictable the Brumbies exposed Olivier.
J-J Engelbrecht is NOT an outside centre against the Brumbies he looked out of his depth he's a wing.
I have a warning for the Bulls if we do not fix our centre combinations soon then we will have a rather poor tour starting next week.
The Crusaders are peaking at the right time why?? two words Dan Carter who is playing the chief playmaker role at 12.
Also when will Fouche ever get game time???All he does is sit on the bench and hold water bottles send him back to the vodacom cup!

I am honestly surprised that Francois Venter is not in the group and also dont understand why Bongi is going with as a third hooker when we only have 3 centres in the group to fill 2 positions at all times?? I dont think that is sensible, especially given the fact that our centre combination has not been convincing as yet ...
