Blue Bulls through to final

The Vodacom Blue Bulls are through to the final of the Vodacom Cup after a convincing 40-20 victory over the Wildeklawer Griquas at Loftus on Saturday.

The Bulls took the initiative in the 5th minute when outside centre Braam Gerber scored the first of his team's four tries, but the rest of the first half was quite tense for the reason that the Bulls were under constant pressure in the scrums and lineouts.

Just before half time the former Blue Bull centre Lafras Uys dived over to open the Griquas' score sheet and at this stage it looked like the home team was in for tough encounter because the continued to struggle to get into a rhythm or to find any momentum.

After leading 10-7 at the break the Bulls shifted to another gear in the last 40 minutes as they sorted out their problems in the set pieces and the result were three dazzling tries, two brilliant drop goals and a textbook display of how to play under the new laws.

Burton Francis landed the first of his two massive drop goals in the 47th minute and shortly after that, the loosehead prop Rassie van Vuuren dashed over to make the score 20-10 in the Bulls' favour.

Francis kicked his second drop goal in the 59th minute and in the last quarter Tiger Mangweni scored twice to seal the win for Nico Serfontein's team.

The Bulls are one of the few teams that enjoy playing under the new laws and that combined with their excellent discipline and their strong defence makes them a very hard team to beat.

In the second half Francis and the scrumhalf JP Joubert controlled the match with their strategic kicking patterns and whenever the Griquas made a mistake the Bulls were there to capitalize.

Individually guys like Mangweni, Francis, Van Vuuren and Ruan Boshoff stood out but the highlight of the match was the team's composure and calmness, particularly in the first half when they were under severe pressure.

The trio of Carel Hoffman, Okkie Kruger and Vince Gwavu did some excellent word in the loose and in the second half Frik Kirsten (reserve prop) and Gerrit-Jan van Velze (reserve lock) made a definite impact as substitutes.

Scorers:

Vodacom Blue Bulls: Tries: Tiger Mangweni (2), Braam Gerber, Rassie van Vuuren. Conversions: Burton Francis (4). Penalties: Burton Francis (2). Drop goals: Burton Francis (2). Wildeklawer Griquas: Tries: Lafras Uys, Riaan Viljoen. Conversions: Riaan Viljoen (2). Penalties: Riaan Viljoen (2).

14. Bulls Bo!!!

Derick is immers 'n baie beter stelskopper as hy.

In elk geval.

Good Luck!!

18. FDP, Bakkies, Bryan, Wikus, Wynand all looking to leave. Ons gaan meer as net senters en hakers nodig he.

19. Stem saam, maar ek moet sĂȘ, Derick Kuun was vandag weereens 'n yster!
