Preview: Vodacom Bulls vs. Blues

The Vodacom Bulls will be psyching themselves up for Saturday's match at Loftus Versfeld against the Blues because they believe the team from Auckland has some of the hardest men in the world of rugby.

The Bulls consider an encounter with the Blues to be very close or even tougher than test rugby and that is one of the reasons why they trained with such intensity throughout the week.

The Blues are a wild bunch on the field and their aggressive defence combined with their tendency to fly into rucks makes them a very difficult opponent, but we have seen in the past that such an approach gets the best out of the Bulls, which means the stage is set for another classic battle at fort Loftus.

The Bulls would like to build on their performance from the first round and coach Frans Ludeke is adamant that his team must concede less turnovers on Saturday, especially because the Blues are masters from broken play.

With someone like Anthony Tuitavake in the Blues' midfield the Bulls will try to limit their mistakes and although some of the other players in their backline are not that well-known, they are all highly talented attackers with the uncanny ability to side-step.

Among the forwards the front row of John Afoa, Keven Mealamu/Tom McCartney and Tevita Mailau pose the biggest threat to the Bulls, while someone like Anthony Boric is a very capable lineout jumper.

In the loose Justin Collins, who has played more that 100 Super Rugby matches, will keep the Bulls busy on the ground but it has to be said that the absence of superstars such as Ali Williams, Joe Rokocoko, Jerome Kaino and possibly also Mealamo who is struggling with a calf injury, will definitely have an impact on the Blues' confidence.

WHAT THE MEDIA SAID

"The Blues have won only once from six previous visits to Loftus. That came in 2003; 56-28. That was a Blues team at the height of the powers against a Bulls side in a rebuilding phase with new coach, Rudy Joubert.

"This year, the opposite is true. The Bulls are a settled unit, with a dozen of them part of the 2007 squad that won the Super 14. The Blues are depleted by injuries and players unavailable through personal reasons. On top of that, new coach Pat Lam made nine changes to the side that beat the Western Force last week. Is he playing his weaker team this week in order to take on the Stormers with his best side next weekend?

"The Bulls have the experience and momentum to beat the Blues with a four try effort. They will need to defend better though, as the likes of Anthony Tuitavake and Rene Ranger are deadly strike runners. Expect the Bulls to win in a try-fest. My score is 35-23 to the Bulls." – JJ Harmse (Rapport)

"New Zeeland teams do not like to be tackled backwards and they don't like their opponents to play right in their faces. In other words, they don't like to play under pressure at all.

"Two years ago, the Bulls beat a full-strength Blues team comfortably by doing just that – putting them under immense pressure and tackling like madmen for 80 minutes. The Bulls have a good record against the Blues over the past few seasons. They are the one South African team capable of fighting fire with fire in terms of the robust and physical approach of the Blues.

"On Saturday the Blues will play with a weakened team, as a few of their stars are not available due to injury. The Bulls must improve drastically on last Saturday's shaky performance on defence. If they do this and Fourie du Preez and Morné Steyn can make the Blues turn around all the time with spot-on tactical kicking, the Blues' weakness under pressure will make them crumble again, like in 2007.

"If the Bulls organize their defence better, especially around the rucks and in midfield where the Blues are very dangerous on attack, they will win this game. If their finishing with ball in hand also improves notable, they will win with a bonus point." – Koos Venter (Rekord)

"On paper, at least, the Bulls look a far more formidable combination. But, at the risk of sounding cliched, this game is never played on paper. However, we do feel the Bulls will have the edge and should win by two clear scores - 10 points or more." – rugby365.co.za

RECENT RESULTS

2008: Blues won 23-21, Auckland

2007: Bulls won 40-19, Pretoria

2006: Blues won 30-17, Auckland

2005: Bulls won 38-24, Pretoria

2004: Blues won 56-19, Albany

*Although matches between these two franchises have been unbelievably closely contested in recent years, the Auckland-based outfit has won only once from six previous visits to Loftus. That came in 2003 and the score was 56-28.

WHAT THE COACHES SAID

Lam is expecting the Bulls to play a fairly predictable game after making just one injury-enforced change to their lineup that opened the season with a home victory over the Reds.

"They've got a strong set piece and a strong kicking game. Fourie du Preez is a key player for them. They've lost Victor Matfield, but replace him with Danie Rossouw who's another Springbok. It's a huge pack they have, one that will challenge us and one we have to deal with." - Blues coach Pat Lam

"We are not going to alter our game plan for every match during this year's Super 14.

"We have quite a basic strategy and that is to put the opposition under pressure and to capitalize from their mistakes. This is exactly what we want to do against the Blues, but I think our quality of execution must be much better than in the first round.

"We need to be more effective at the breakdowns and I would like us to make a step-up in our scrums and our lineout play. I think we created ample scoring opportunities against the Reds, but on Saturday we must double our efficiency when we get the opportunity to attack." - Bulls coach Frans Ludeke

39. Hallo al my blou-blou vriende.

As alles so voortgaan gaan hierdie ouens 'n groot seisoen he.
