Preview: Vodacom Bulls vs. Reds

The Vodacom Bulls have traditionally been known as slow starters in Super Rugby but this year they would like to turn things around particularly because they have three matches at Loftus Versfeld before they depart for Australasia.

We all know that winning at home is nonnegotiable in the Super 14 and Victor Matfield and his troops are in no doubt that they can have a good start to the competition.

"Our team closely resemble the team that won the Super 14 in 2007 and I think we have the necessary depth to do well in the tournament.

"Our bench, with guys like Danie Rossouw, Chiliboy Ralepelle and Pedrie Wannenburg is exceptionally strong, but rugby is not won on paper.

"It is all about what's going on in your head and your heart."

Matfield added that the Bulls will not get ahead of themselves and he stressed the fact that you have to take it week by week in the Super 14.

"You don't have any easy games in Super Rugby and you never get to a point where you can relax for a weekend.

"Every game is as hard as the next one and every Monday we sit in the auditorium and say to one another that this week is the most important week in the competition. That is the way Super 14 rugby is and that is why it is a great competition."

WHAT THE COACHES SAID

There were some concerns among Bulls supporters that the team did not have enough contact sessions in the off season but coach Frans Ludeke is not at all worried about this aspect of his team's preparation.

"We've played only one warm-up match against the Cheetahs but we had a lot of contact during training and I am confident that it won't be a problem against the Reds.

"We are all eager to get started after a hard off season and it is great to have a full strength side available for the first match.

"The breakdowns are going to be particularly important on Saturday and we all know that the Reds are hungry for success. They are a quality side with lots of good players and they are known to play for the full 80 minutes." – Bulls coach Frans Ludeke

"Their pack is obviously a strength and they have a very good set-piece. If you look at the make-up of their side it's basically the nucleus of the Springboks side that won the World Cup. We won't be focussing on anybody in particular, but they do have a very good kicking scrumhalf in Fourie Du Preez. We need to starve them of possession and keep our own ball." - Reds coach Phil Mooney

WHAT THE MEDIA SAID

"The opening weekend of Super Rugby should tell us a lot about the chances of the Bulls in 2009. There are usually a lot of factors in the opening week or two that can determine a result, none more so than over-zealous referees.

"The Bulls have decided to go into the game with two fetchers and Derick Kuün at hooker, so have clearly identified the breakdown as the main area of contention. If they stay within the laws of the game there, they will have a great chance to secure good possession and slow down the Reds. The Australians had some good warm-up results, but will miss a couple of key players due to injury and personal circumstances.

"The Bulls, on the other hand, have the team, they have the crowd and most of all, have the opportunity to start the season in the best way possible. Expect them to deliver. Bulls to win by 10-14 points. And yes, there will be four tries." – JJ Harmse (Rapport)

"This is the moment of truth for Frans Ludeke and his team. They had enough time to prepare and there are relative few injury problems in the squad. So, it is time to give the faithful supporters hope for the next three and a half months. On paper this is a very good team with not many weaknesses. They have more than enough experience and superstars in the midst to beat every team in this competition, provided that their conditioning are up to standard and also that they implement the right game plan.

"Three factors are going to be crucial.

"Firstly, the Bulls must be competitive at the breakdowns. Deon Stegmann will have to step up his game and show that he really can be a match winning factor as a fetcher on this level. He can't ask for a better challenge to do this than a head-on clash with Daniel Braid, the ex-All Black and Blues flanker, who will make his debut for the Reds on Saturday.

"Secondly, Morné Steyn's performance will also be vital. This talented fly half must show that he can read and dictate the game and keep the ball in front of his forwards. His tactical kicking is absolutely vital for the success of the conservative and simple style of rugby that Ludeke want his team to play.

"Lastly, this game will show if the champions of 2007 have settled and gelled as a unit, after last years problems. Frans Ludeke must also step up and show that he can inspire and motivate his team to the same extends that Heyneke Meyer accomplished in his era." – Koos Venter (Rekord)

"With Victor Matfield back to lead the team and shore up their set pieces, expect a far more structured approach from the Bulls in which they slowly strangle the life out of the visitors. I predict the Bulls to pull away in the end and win convincingly by 15 points." – Jan de Koning rugby365.co.za

HELP!"
"Skop, man, skop!"
"Waarna toe?"

17. More almal.

Hy is sy eie man.

Wie is bv beter- Akona of Odwa?

29. Bloutokkelossie,

58. With all due respect to Fourie du Preez, I don't think he played that well last year. I said it on this blog last year that I don't think he is playing as well as he should. And the reason I said that at the time was because he was too busy trying to captain the team and play rugby like Fourie du Preez can.

Victor can captain a team and play bloody good rugby at the same time. So already this is a better team than last year!!

I haven't heard much about it since the end of last season (sa rugby news don't tend to make it all the way hear unless it affects NZ) but does anyone remember the whole issue and legal battles with Bakkies Botha and wanting to get out of his contract? I assume the reason no one has brought that up is because it has been settled, so now Bakkies can focus on playing Bulls rugby and Bulls rugby only. Again making this a better team than last year.

I know last year we didn't end that high on the table, but it must be said that close to the end of the season we showed some good form, beating the New South Wales, who eventually went on to play in the final, and we beat them quite convincingly. I can only put that down to the players getting used to the new coaching style, and gelling as a team. This is something which one would think would have continues to go on over the off season.

And this is a very deep team, I mean just look at the bench, Danie Rossouw is A world Champion and he is on the bench. Not that many Super 14 teams have World Cup winners on their benches.

I am very optimistic about this team and this season, I can't wait to get it started with a bang! If you win the title once people might say we got lucky, if you follow your championship season up with what we had last year people WILL say it was just luck. Lets prove that we deserve to be called super 14 champions again, but how about this time we have a home semifinal on the greatest ground in the world!! Lets go Bulls!!!
