Bulls unchanged for Blues challenge

The Vodacom Bulls know they face their toughest test of this year’s Super 14 against the Blues in Auckland on Saturday, but are confident they have the firepower to win anywhere in this competition.

Coach Frans Ludeke named an unchanged side from the one which beat the Force in Perth in their first tour match but considering the Bulls have never won in Auckland, the task set this weekend will be to score another first for this side.

Utility back Jaco van der Westhuyzen will win his 50th cap when he comes off the bench while the only injury concern for the Bulls is the hamstring twinge to Derick Kuün, which he will be given to Friday to overcome. Prop Jaco Engels has been bracketed with Kuün on the bench for the match and will slot in if needed.

Ludeke said his team was taking nothing for granted, but backed themselves against a Blues side which has shown they can be as dangerous as they are unpredictable.

“They certainly are a dangerous team to face,” Ludeke told SuperSport.com, “The game against the Brumbies wasn’t the only one they were unlucky not to win and they certainly will pose a massive challenge for us this weekend.

“Our defence will have to be good, because they have players who can be lethal when they get the ball in space as well as a good pack of forwards. But like always, we’re focusing on our own game and we will make small adjustments in our defensive structure to the way they play.”

While the Bulls were not at their own high standards in the 28-15 win over the Force, they were better than most gave them credit for. For the first time this year they didn’t concede a try, and were forced to play a lot more in a game which had over 300 tackles in it.

“The Force really came out firing against us and showed they were prepared to work for the win. The first half we were forced to defend a lot against them and we lost the ball a few times close to their tryline. We were more patient in the second half and got the victory.

“We have been tested in a number of ways this year and have come through but this weekend it will be a big challenge for us. We have maintained all along we want to grow as a team and if we can take another step towards that this weekend, we will be happy.”

Bulls – 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Gerhard van der Heever, 13 Jaco Pretorius, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Victor Matfield (c), 4 Danie Rossouw, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Gary Botha, 1 Gurthrö Steenkamp. Substitutes: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Bees Roux, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Derick Kuün/Jaco Engels, 20 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 21 Jaco van der Westhuyzen, 22 Pedrie Wannenburg.

6. More alle Bulle en kuiergaste:

13. Dit is my mening.

Dit maak my siek.

Gaan 'n close game wees.

29. Hallo almal,

31. Hello all,

Where is this stadium in Soweto where the Bulls have to play their semi and final ?
Posted by Sharko (Petoorsfontein) Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 14:01
32. I dont think there is any team that the Bulls cant beat on their current form.

Sometimes, the quality of the opposition can bring a side down though. We have seen that countless times even on test level.

The Force game was a good enough win for the Bulls, and besides...it was a win. So what is the problem ? The Force can still be a tough side on their home ground.

Good luck against the Blues. This will be a tough game, but the Bulls should take it.
Posted by Sharko (Petoorsfontein) Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 14:11
33. Hi Sharko

How are you?

The stadium is the orlando stadium in soweto. It was completely revamped for the soccer.
Posted by Bl@de Runner (Krugersdorp) Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 14:12
34. Hey Blade - Cool and you ?

I find it hard to understand why this has to be the case. My apologies for my ignorance but I havent really been following the news stories about this.

The first world cup game at Loftus is 13th June. Unless I have it wrong ? The Super 14 final is scheduled for end May. Do they think the rugby will rip up the pitch that badly that the game cant be played at Loftus - or is there another reason ?

I want to go to the final with my Bulls jersey on but I am not going if it is in Soweto. Unless I am with a big group.
Posted by Sharko (Petoorsfontein) Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 14:29
35. Sharko

All the soccer stadiums must be released to fifa on a pre arranged date. The stadiums then belongs to fifa and no other events are allowed at these stadiums. This must be done before the Super 14 semifinal. It sucks. I am sure that there will be busses organised from Loftus to soweto.
Posted by Bl@de Runner (Krugersdorp) Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 14:44
36. Sharko, if you want to go to Orlando stadium my advice is go in with a bus. I am sure there will be buses for supporters from Pretoria.

Posted by Stapper (Pretoria) Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 14:55
38. 'n Interresante statistieke:

Strafskoppe afgestaan per span:

Blues: 67
Brumbies: 65
Bulls: 44
Cheetahs: 53
Chiefs: 66
Crusaders: 58
Highlanders:72
Hurricanes: 66
Lions: 90
Reds: 63
Sharks: 75
Stormers: 61
Waratahs: 68
Western Force: 61

Blues: 2 Geel
Brumbies
Bulls
Cheetahs
Chiefs: 3 Geel, Speler geban
Crusaders: 1 Geel
Highlanders: 2 Geel
Hurricanes: 2 Geel
Lions: 1 Geel, Speler geban
Reds: 4 Geel
Sharks: 3 Geel
Stormers:
Waratahs: Speler geban
Western Force: 1 Geel, Speler geban

Hou so aan bulle!

Groete daar!

40. Sharko,

The Orlando stadium was revamped but during the world cup it will only be used for the opening concert on 10 June and not for any actual soccer matches.
It is now a 40 000+ seater and from the photos looks like a real world class stadium. It really is "no contest" in comparison with other alternatives such as Supersport Centurion; Wanderers;(Configured for cricket and therefore not suitable for rugby spectators who like to be closer to the action.)
Pilditch/LC de Villiers are clearly too small. Absa stadium and Newlands would have also been considered but the travelling expence would be beyond the means of the average supporter.
Security is obviously an issue but with plenty of parking at Nasrec it would be possible to bus everybody in either from there or from Pretoria, probably both.
The only concern I have got is that we are now publically counting our chickens before they hatch!
Can you imagine how you guys will be on our case if we were to slip-up.Not to mention the Stormers supporters. No, it would have been much wiser to have kept our contingency plan a secret till much closer to the time.

I see your point - I really do! I am married to a Stormer who is now all of a sudden very loud about his team BUT imagine the Bulls had to announce only a week before the semi's that supporters have to travel to Soweto?? I was not impressed by the idea when I first saw it but a lot more people are actually getting used to it. A lot more people are no thinking open minded.

The BBM thought about this long and hard and they expected the initial response from the supporters and they understand that there are a lot of logistical stuff that we as supporters as well as themselves will have to sort out before it can happen.

This way they have time to explain everything systematically to us.

Good move (but I really do see your point)

You said it, we should have kept it a secret. On the other hand at least we are forward thinking and get contingency plans, unlike Bafana who didn't have a camp till last month - and not like SARU who went ahead and demanded rugby at Newlands even though they knew NO other sporting code may stage a major event, such as an international, during the World Cup in a Host city. We accept that Pretoria is a Host City and our beloved Loftus is being used on the greatest stage and so made alternative plans WHEN we host the semi final and final. :)
