Dream Year for PTHS

2014 has been a dream year for the Pretoria Technical High School’s first rugby team.  Players have been selected for provincial teams, records have been set and they are the official Gauteng Provincial Winter Games Champions of 2014.

One of their many highlights of the year, thus far, has been the selection of two of their players; Xabiso Mtumtum and Tammy Butalezi, for the Blue Bulls u/16 XV for the Grant Khomo week. Another triumph for PTHS in the provincial department, comes from their venture into women’s rugby for the first time ever. Mika Nkuna, a grade 10 learner at the school was selected for the Blue Bulls Girls u/16 team that competed in Durban during the June/July holidays.

A special honour for the team was when SAIL got on board as the main sponsor of the team. The sponsored the team with a full kit and some equipment.

In August, the ‘Tech Tigers’, as the team is called, qualified for the Beeld Trophy playoffs for the first time. Unfortunately they lost in the knock-out stages of the competition to Alberton High School of the Golden Lions Rugby Union. However, they remained in high spirits approaching the Gauteng School Provincial Games that were hosted at the University of Pretoria’s LC de Villiers sports grounds on the 15th of August. The team walked away with wins in both of their matches, having played schools from the Golden Lions Rugby Union and the Falcons Rugby Union, thus claiming the title of Provincial Winter Games, hosted by the Gauteng Department of Education and the Department of Sport and Recreation, champions for 2014.

“The success of our team is thanks to the dedication and hard work of the players and the commitment from our coaching staff. This is something we intend to build on for the coming season”, says Head Coach, Francois van Tonder. This clearly shows in the teams’ results, having beaten Rosina Sedibane 87-0 and Silverton High School 76-0.

PTHS was also one of the four schools selected to participate in the first leg of the “Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour”, in South Africa. The event was held at Waterkloof High School, where various schools took part in coaching clinics hosted by Ian McIntosh and Gary Botha, as well as played a few friendly games of tag rugby.

PTHS which is also home of the High School section of the Blue Diamonds Rugby Club, an Inner City Development club, now sets their focus on the SA Schools Championships in December, which is a national sevens tournament hosted by DBE and SRSA. This week of rugby will again take place at the University of Pretoria’s LC de Villiers sports grounds, where PTHS hope to become the National 7’s champions.

We wish them all the best in their training and preparations for the Youth Club season and their upcoming endeavors.
