Player of the Week – Vodacom Blue Bulls u.21 squad
31 October 2011

This week the accolades of the Vodacom Blue Bulls u.21 side’s victory in the final of the Absa u.21 Cup go to the whole team and no individual. The pleasing aspect of this award is the fact that individual u.21 players have won this before, but it was ultimately a team effort that secured the trophy for the squad.

Numerous players in the squad excelled even when called upon in senior rugby, with the likes of Arno Botha, Francois Venter, Louis Fouché and CJ Stander making great strides in the Absa Currie Cup.

Injuries and call-ups has resulted in ever-changing line-ups, but coach Nollis Marais and his staff never allowed this to break the stride of the Young Blue Bulls. Marais did wonders after joining the squad after the completion of the Varsity Cup and the pre-season work was clearly done very well by assistant coaches Denzil Frans and Ricardo Loubscher.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls u.21’s finished top of the log and in total, won 12 out of 14 matches, amassed 637 points in the process and scored 73 tries. They conceded 300 points and 35 tries, for a match average winning score of 45-21 (five tries to two per game).

No yellow or reds cards was shown to the team either, proof of their very good discipline.

JC Roos with 122 points (1 try, 21 conversions, 23 penalties, 2 dropped goals) finished as leading points scorer, with Louis Fouche (110 points; 1 try, 21 conversions, 18 penalties, 3 dropped goals) in second place.

Sampie Mastriet topped the try scoring tally for both the competition and the team with 16 tries (80 points).
