Morné Steyn
03 April 2011

Morné Steyn became the sole record holder of dropped goals in Super Rugby on Saturday.

He twice struck against the Hurricanes, in the 13th and 23rd minutes of the first half to past legendary Crusaders pivot Andrew Mehrtens record of 17 drops in Super Rugby and added five penalties to that for a match tally of 21 points and a career record of 850 points. Both are also South African records in Super Rugby.

“Morné took control of the game as only he can,” coach Frans Ludeke praised his pivot afterwards.

“His reading of the game was such that he took control with those long range drops and never allowed the Hurricanes to get a look in. That was exactly what we needed and Morné showed his true class by dominating field position,” Ludeke said.
