Okkie Kruger
05 October 2010

His starts for the Vodacom Blue Bulls may be far and in-between, but for 23-year old Okkie Kruger, last Saturday’s Currie Cup clash against Western Province was a match to remember.

Kruger did not only earned a first start this season for the Currie Cup side, his inclusion probed to be a stroke of genius by coach Frans Ludeke, as Kruger had a blinder.

The soon to be doctor not only scored the try that started the Vodacom Blue Bulls fight back just before the break, he was also making a nuisance of himself at the breakdown. The former Affies pupil made nine turnovers, the most of any Blue Bulls player, carried the ball with purpose and making numerous telling tackles.

All of this knowing that an injury might prevent him from joining the SA Sevens team, due to fly out to Dubai the next day as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games in India. It will be Kruger’s first stint with the BlitzBoks, but he was on the radar of national sevens coach, Paul Treu for a long time.

High performance manager at the Blue Bulls Company, Ian Schwartz, said the decision to allow Kruger to leave for sevens duties was dependant on the injury situation in the team.

“But we also realised that this was a fantastic opportunity for Okkie to represent his country at a unique event like the Commonwealth Games and we had no hesitation in allowing him to go.”
