Confederation Cup 2009

Most of us do not know a lot about soccer, but with the World Cup as well as the Confederation Cup coming to South Africa it is worth sharpening our knowledge about these two colossal events that are going to take place on our shores.

What is the Confederation Cup?

The FIFA Confederations Cup is an association football tournament for national teams, currently held every four years by FIFA.

It is contested by the winners of each of the six FIFA confederation championships (the champions of the six continents) along with the FIFA World Cup winner and the host country, to bring the number of teams up to eight.

From 2005, the Confederations Cup is to be held once in every four years, one year prior to each World Cup in the host country of the forthcoming World Cup.

Is it a dress-rehearsal of the World Cup?

The Confederation Cup is considered as a dress-rehearsal for the World Cup it precedes; it uses around half of the stadia intended for use at the following year's World Cup and gives the host nation, who qualify for that tournament automatically, a vital taste of competitive football
