The Vodacom Blue Bulls have moved into second position on the Vodacom Cup log for the time being after beating the Vodacom WP 45-35 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, courtesey of a 25-point contribution by flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter.
The Blue Bulls knew that nothing less than five log points would suffice and with WP also keen to run the ball with their campaign a thing of the past, the match delivered some entertaining rugby. Although the Blue Bulls looked in control throughout, WP was in the match for the largest part of the match.
The young number eight, Emile Verster, opened the Blue Bulls’ account from a line-out movement and showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition to score the first of his side’s five tries.
The performance of the day was delivered by Potgieter, however, who showed that he has reached maturity as a flyhalf with the way he controlled the match with his boot. His dropped goal came at a critical time and had a calming effect on the team.
This victory ensures that the Blue Bulls remain in contention for a place in the final, but with the Valke having a game in hand against lesser opposition, the Pretorians will be hoping for a miracle.
