Jones to assist the Vodacom Bulls' coaches
Posted on Friday, January 11, 2008 - 14:27
Former Australia coach Eddie Jones will meet with the Vodacom Bulls' coaching staff on Monday and Tuesday in Pretoria to provide a strategic overview of the team's plans and preparations.

Jones' involvement with the Bulls is limited to strategic rather than on field coaching and after his visit on 14 and 15 January he will again team up with the Bulls' coaching staff prior to their departure to Australia and New Zealand.

Jones will meet with Frans Ludeke and his assistants for a third time after the overseas' leg of their Super 14 campaign.

Jones was recently appointed as Saracens' Director of Rugby and his review with the coaches will cover the Bulls' playing philosophy, training methodology, attack, defence, set pieces, break down, job roles and job descriptions as well as game planning.

According to Ludeke Jones' input will stimulate the system at the Bulls and he will undoubtedly kindle his and his assistants' minds.

Jones, who was born in Burnie, Tasmania of a Japanese mother and an Australian father, coached the ACT Brumbies to their first ever Super 12 title in 2001 and took Australia to the final of the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

The Vodacom Bulls' wing and IRB Player of the Year Bryan Habana said Jones did a marvelous job with the Springboks at the World Cup.

"Everybody is talking about Eddie and his role with the Boks and I can honestly say he was of immense help to us. No one really knew what to expect from him, but he fitted in without any problems and he was always available and eager to help us or give us advice.

"He did not change our way of play and he did not try to persuade us to play Australian rugby. He worked on our basics and helped us to maximize our strengths.

"I think because of all his experience and what he has achieved in the past he took a lot of the pressure off Jake White and he was just a great guy to have in the team."

**It is interesting to note that during the World Cup the Springbok team decided that Jones should get a Springbok blazer and Habana gladly gave his blazer to Jones.

A stake was driven through one of the last strongholds of white power in South Africa with the appointment last week of the country's first black rugby coach - part of an orchestrated plan to rid the white-dominated sport of racism.

The Observer can reveal that the selection of Peter de Villiers is key to a sweeping revolution - devised at a series of secret meetings 12 months ago - 'to flush away institutional racism' in South African rugby. With ANC officials this week due to rename the world-renowned Springboks as the Proteas after the country's national flower, the shake-up will also see an 'honorary black man' becoming the team's new captain. In a saga of race, rugby and revenge that spans four decades, the son of Dan 'Cheeky' Watson, a white anti-apartheid activist, is being groomed to lead the national rugby side - to the horror of many white Afrikaners, who regard the sport as part of their religion and culture. The plan to appoint Luke Watson follows claims that a 'third force' is operating within the country to keep black players out the team.
Posted by BBrown (Dbn) on Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 14:03
'These changes will shake the last bastion of white conservatives in this country to the core,' one official told The Observer. 'This is as important an event for South Africa as the moment Nelson Mandela walked free from prison. The old, racist of days of South African rugby are finally over.' The architect of the shake-up is none other than 'Cheeky' Watson, now a Cape Town businessman and prominent rugby official, but still despised by some white observers for helping black freedom fighters.

Watson rejected the honour of playing for the all-white Springboks in 1976, preferring to join segregated black teams on dustbowl township pitches at the height of apartheid. Challenged to practise his Christian convictions by a black journalist, Watson also coached a black township side, refusing the offer of a cap and a place on South Africa's tour to France in exchange for turning his back on black rugby
Posted by BBrown (Dbn) on Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 14:03
For Afrikaners, this was heresy - and against the country's apartheid-era race laws. Some were determined to make Watson pay for insulting the famous green and gold jersey.

His home was firebombed by white vigilantes after he entertained black players there. He was shot at in the street and his business burned down. After taking his team for training, he had to escape a white mob outside a Port Elizabeth stadium by lying on the floor of a taxi.

Watson joined the then illegal African National Congress in 1978. His brother, also a rugby player, was an intelligence officer for the ANC. They were followed by secret police and shunned by white friends. After Mandela's election as the country's first black leader in 1994, Watson rose through the ranks of South African rugby. An influential figure, he is expected to be appointed to the president's council in charge of the sport.

Posted by BBrown (Dbn) on Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 14:04
Yet this is about race rather than rugby. Since Mandela famously celebrated in a Springbok shirt after South Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup win, sport has been seen as a barometer of the racial health of the nation. But the moves to finally transform rugby are causing uproar. Sources close to the players claim four unnamed white players have privately indicated they will not play for a black coach. Others have indicated they will move abroad, saying they are being penalised for being white.

Despite being regarded by many as the best player in South Africa, Luke Watson was not picked for last year's World Cup squad amid rumours that some white Afrikaners regarded him as a 'traitor' for his attacks on racism - and that no son of Cheeky Watson would ever play for the Springboks. After captaining Springbok sides at schools and under-21 level, Luke Watson was named South Africa's player of the year in four awards. Yet he was repeatedly overlooked by Jake White, the country's white coach, who insisted he was not good enough for the team.

Posted by BBrown (Dbn) on Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 14:04
Watson played his first - and last - game for the Springboks last summer when White agreed to select him as a 'black player' under a quota system designed to allow the disadvantaged a place in the team. Watson was warned not to play in trials against his own white team-mates amid rumours of a plot to 'crucify' him on the pitch. It is claimed he was also snubbed by white players, who refused to carry out the traditional initiation ceremony after he was finally selected.

But after a political row and threats by the coach to resign, Watson did not make the squad for last year's World Cup. Watson claimed White, who fielded only two black players in a team of 15, 'lacked integrity.'

Privately, senior ANC figures were also seething. Although South Africa won the World Cup last year for the first time since 1995, officials had already decided to activate their plan to revolutionise the sport
Posted by BBrown (Dbn) on Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 14:05
As secretly agreed before the tournament, Jake White was not offered a new contract. At a private meeting to decide on a new coach last week, there were furious scenes among members of the game's ruling council. Sources claim one member voiced opposition to de Villiers' appointment because he was black, and Watson reportedly accused fellow selectors of being 'inherent racists' who believed 'black men can do nothing right'. De Villiers was appointed after a 10-9 vote. The strategy to bring Watson back has been carefully mapped out. 'It would not surprise me to see Luke Watson as captain by the end of this year,' said a friend of de Villiers. De Villiers stressed last week that 'there will always be room for a quality white player' but he is committed to having 10 black players in his team and has said he would have Watson as his captain if he became national coach.

English newspapers on Sunday revisited our story that Luke Watson was being groomed as John Smit’s successor.

Before the start of the 2007 international season Dale Granger and myself wrote a front page Argus story that Watson would captain South Africa in 2008 and that Peter de Villiers would coach the side. Additionally the black administration within the game had set its target of between eight and 10 black players in the starting XV for the season’s first test against Wales.

De Villiers, at the time, was quoted as saying Watson would be his favourite to captain the side and that he would have no problem fielding that many black players.

Subsequently, De Villiers has rejected the view that he promised Watson the captaincy or made any deal with the Watson family. De Villiers told me in conversation a month before his job interview that he would primarily look to the bulk of the World Cup winning squad to sustain momentum in 2008.

He also said John Smit, if he was fit and in form, would be the obvious choice to continue as captain through to the Lions series in 2009.

De Villiers said the primary target in 2008 was to win at least one test against the All Blacks in New Zealand - and to do so he would have to tap into what was achieved by the World Cup-winning squad. He was adamant the core of that group still had at least two years left as test players.

The Observer, eight months after the Argus piece, supposedly reveals that a series of secret meetings happened a year ago to flush away institutional racism in South African rugby. This includes appointing a black coach, scrapping the Bok emblem and installing an “honourary black man” (Watson) as Bok captain. It is exactly what was written in South Africa in June last year. The story was dismissed by Oregan Hoskins and Mike Stofile as mischief-making.

“These changes will shake the last bastion of white conservatives in this country to the core,” one Saru official told The Observer. “This is as important an event for South Africa as the moment Nelson Mandela walked free from prison. The old, racist of days of South African rugby are finally over.”

Watson was controversially added to the Bok squad last year at the insistence Hoskins. The WP flank played one Test, against Samoa at Ellis Park, and may have gone on the Tri-Nations tour had he not been injured. He was not selected for the World Cup.

Former Bok coach Jake White said in his book that Watson was never good enough for Test rugby. The player has also lost the Stormers captaincy to Jean de Villiers.

Bite me

I agree that we need to boycott the game if it continues like this but I have serious reservations if the rugby supporters can stand together and actually get anything right. Very few people will stay away and the stands will still be full, so nothing will come of it. Go and look at the SARSU.ORg site and you will see that only about 800 peple signed the petition. The problem with the rugby supporters is that we are not united. We have all these little splinter groups doing their own thing. There is not one voice to take our "demands" to the SARU. Until we can get our act together there will be no change.

In the North we then saw full-up jumping goats, brick buck, bald buck,

Camel horses and also more cats.

One time genuine our sinews were clean on hollow.

We aftercame that a lazy-horse was becreeping us.

In an uncle-tin we were slaughter ready with our double walk hail

guns.

When the lazy-horse mixed behind the bush, we all shot equal.

After all was past, our hairs were very through each other. We then

made It into small nets, we climbed in the dish, and rode home.

So het ons lang, opwindende dag geeindig.

So did our long, wound-up day end!

More Bulle !!!
...en Bergbok !!!

Dag chokers.....

Sipho! I have a cow for you for just R500!"
"E yoh, Bongani! I'll take it - you can bring it to me tomorrow!"
The next day: "Sorry Sipho, but the cow died last night."
"Hauw.. So, ok then. Just give me my money back."
"Sorry Sipho, I did already spent that money.."
"Eish! So, ok then. Just bring me the dead cow." So, Bongani brought the
dead cow to Sipho the next morning.
A few weeks later, Bongani bumped into Sipho and asked him what he did
with the dead cow:
"You won't believe, Bongani! I made a raffle for the cow, and I sold
251 tickets for R5 each! I made a profit of R850! But, I didn't tell anyone
the cow was dead.."
"Yoh! And the people didn't they complain?"
"Eish! Only the guy which won! So, I gave him back his R5 and he was
happy!"

Sipho is now in parliament....

A little boy was doing his maths homework.

He said to himself,
"Two plus five, the son of a b!tch is seven.
Three plus six, the son of a b!tch is nine..."

His mother heard what he was saying and gasped, "What are you doing?"
The little boy answered, "I'm doing my maths homework, Mom."
"And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?" the mother asked.
"Yes," he answered.

Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, "What are you
teaching my son in maths?"
The teacher replied, "Right now, we are learning addition."
The mother asked, "And are you teaching them to say two plus two, the son
of a b!tch is four?"

After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered, "What I taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four."
