Hoffman back after four years
Posted on Tuesday, February 05, 2008 - 15:08
Carel Hoffman is back in the light blue jersey after more than three years in the rugby desert for Friday night's game when the Vodacom Blue Bulls take on the Leopards in Phalaborwa.

Hoffman was an absolute star for the Blue Bulls' junior teams in 2002 and 2003 but after playing Vodacom Cup rugby in 2004 he decided to hang up his boots.

He is a product of Affies and will play in a loose trio alongside the captain Pieter Meyer and the medical student Okkie Kruger. Kruger has some possible responsibilities regarding his studies scheduled for Friday and if he can't play Emile Verster will partner Meyer on the flank.

It is interesting to note that Hoffman, Kruger and Verster are all products of Affies and Meyer matriculated at Waterkloof.

Coach Nico Serfontein stuck with the core of his team that played against the Valke as well as the Lions but he will be without SA under 20-trialists such as Gerrit-Jan van Velze, Henri Bantjes, Stefan Watermeyer and Berend Botha.

The youngsters are part of a group of 38 who are currently taking part in a training camp as well as trials in Saldanha.

Serfontein said he will use the game against the Leopards to get some continuity going and it is very important at this stage to assess the depth of the squad.

"I am not concerned about the result. What is important now is that we build up some momentum and every game is an opportunity for the players to get use to the new laws.

"We will be playing according to a different set of laws against the Leopards and every game we play is a learning experience for us all."

Vodacom Blue Bulls: Tiger Mangweni; Johan Jackson, Stephan Dippenaar, Luvuyo Mhlobiso, Rocco Jansen; Burton Francis, François Hougaard; Carel Hoffman, Okkie Kruger, Pieter Meyer(c), Juandré Kruger, Hendrik Roodt, Dietlov Coetzee, Bandise Maku, Dean Greyling. Reserves: Sangoni Mxoli, Danie Crous, Rassie van Vuuren, Wouter Moore, Warwick Tecklenburg, Vincent Gwavu, Emile Verster, Theo Bekker, Ruan Snyman,Ruan Boshoff, Dewald Pretorius, Lutho Nyeka, TC Losper.

Grappie vir julle

Jacob Zuma while visiting a Primary School, visits one of the
classrooms.

The class are in the middle of a discussion related to words and
their meanings. The teacher asks the new ANC leader if he would to lead
the discussion on the word "Tragedy". So the leader asks the class for
an example of a tragedy.

Josiah stands up and offers: "If my friend, who lives on a farm,
is playing in the field and a runaway tractor comes along and knocks him
dead, that would be a tragedy".

"No "says Zuma, that would be an "accident".

Beauty raises her hand: "If a school bus, carrying 50 children,
drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy.
"I'm afraid not" explains Zuma, "That's what we would call a "great
loss".

The room goes silent. No other children volunteer. Jacob Zuma
searches the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example
of a tragedy?"

Finally at the back of the class Sipho raises his hand. In a quiet
voice he says: "If a jet, carrying you, your wife and most of the ANC
ministers, is struck by a missile, that would
be a tragedy."

"Fantastic!" exclaims Zuma, "that's right. Now can you tell me why
that would be a tragedy?.

"Well says Sipho, "because it wouldn't be a great loss, and it
probably wouldn't be an accident either."

kak FORD bakkie gehad."
