    Lekker lees.....grin

The Sharks scored a five try to one 33-5 victory over the Lions in a preseason warm-up match at The Absa Stadium Durban on a hot and muggy Wednesday evening.
The Sharks were full value for their win, but both sides would have rued missed chances thanks to the difficult conditions common in Durban in February where the ball has a tendency to take on the consistency of a bar of wet soap.

The game was anything but a ‘friendly’ as at times niggle crept into the game and referee Craig Joubert had his hands full. But given that both sides were taking the game seriously in their efforts to build ahead of the Super 14 which starts in just over a week’s time, the physicality was bound to step up a level.
Throughout the contest, the Lions were starved of quality ball and had to feed off the Sharks mistakes - inevitable given the sheer amount of possession they enjoyed and the slippery ball which did mar the game at times given the amount of exciting play that the teams put together.

Sadly for the visitors, they battled to do much with the ball when they had it, and by the half time break had only threatened the Sharks line on only two or three occasions – each time finding the defences impenetrable.
The Sharks would have been kicking themselves as they failed to capitalise on the numerous opportunities they had, but given the early season rustiness that comes about with most of the players involved in only their first game, it is understandable.

What was pleasing was how early match jitters and mistakes were ironed out as the experience came through and it was credit to Johann Muller who has stepped into the captaincy role.
The Sharks held a 14-0 lead at the break and possibly could have been further ahead, but had shown moments of promise to give an indication of the kind of attacking rugby they will be playing this season.

The second half played out pretty similarly with the Lions again starved of ball and having to make do with what little possession they could get their hands on. They managed to score a fairly lucky ball which came off a Sharks mistake, but that was bracketed between two Sharks tries and it was little consolation with them failing to craft any rewarding attacking movements.
The Sharks meanwhile showed how devastatingly dangerous they can be on attack and constantly asked questions of the Lions on defence.

Defensively, the Sharks would have been pretty happy with their showing – aside from the lapse that led to the Lions’ solitary try, while five tries of their own was a pretty decent haul.

With Dick Muir ringing the changes in the second half, he had an opportunity to play everyone and the individuals certainly gave a good account of themselves.

Quality depth is important in a tournament of this class, and the Sharks look to be well-covered in this department.

Forwards coach John Plumtree will be happy with the showing of his charges who stole a number of lineout balls and at one stage scrummed the Lions back five metres. They also fronted up against a side who has built up a solid pack in the past season or so.

Defensively, the Sharks were very good in the tackle and the Lions, who had broken the line against the Bulls almost at will last week, failed to find the same hospitality from the Sharks.

In all, a good showing from the Sharks who now have nine days until they take on the Western Force at The Absa Stadium Durban next Friday night.

    Sharks: 33 (14)
Tries: Ryan Kankowski, Beast Mtawarira (2), Henno Mentz, Jacques Botes
    Conversions: Ruan Pienaar (4)

    Lions: 5 (0)
    Tries: TBC

Bolla of Januarie.

    Feb 06 2008 08:47:38:267PM - (SA)

    Stephen Nell

Kaapstad.

“Ek is beïndruk. Dit is ’n heel ander groep spelers,” sê hy.

Brian Mujati (vaskopstut) is ’n ster.

Dis asof daar iets anders is. Rassie Erasmus (afrigter) doen iets reg.”

Onthou MJ the biggest name in the Lions team was Earl Rose. Hehehe

morning me people of the shark

i went to the game highy anticipating a great game...
truth be said, it was a TERRIBLE game... the sharks never got going and our tries were only scored of forward movements and ball dropping funny of lions mistakes... the highlight of the game was one great try... an awesome movement that started on our own 22 with great interpassing skills, but that wa IT!!

we received 1 red and 3yellow cards, crazy!! and if it wasnt for the fact tnhat they determined before the game taht a yellow would only mean 2min in the bin and a red 10 but the player must be subbed we might have come off a lot worse.

we played a lion's c-team (i mean their big name player was earl rose?!?!) and never looked in total controle...
frans didt play but our 'springbok backline' was no real threat and look lackluster. michalak was not impressive at all... only players that can really hold their heads up high is botes, ruan (who kicked like a beauty to poles) henno and man of the match Kanko... Kees and Rory also looked really good when they came on (dont think beast is strong enough yet-not that i will tell it to hime to his face ha ha)...

the only good thing about the game is that we got "this one" out of the sysytem...

    Warm-up woes for Sharks

    Super 14 | February 7th, 2008
After two warm-up matches that yielded little in value, the Sharks go into their campaign opening match against the Force more than a little undercooked.

Last night they romped to a 33-5 victory over a understrength Lions, but the aggressive nature of the (friendly) game was highly counterproductive for them.

Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis and AJ Venter all spent time in the sin bin for various offences forcing the coaching staff to reshuffle the decks in their absence. This had an adverse effect on the team’s gameplan and structure, where they were hoping to smooth some rough edges prior to their February 15 kick-off against the Force.

“From the start it was extremely physical and the cards were definitely disruptive,” Sharks assistant coach Grant Bashford told keo.co.za.

“We had trained in a certain way and wanted to execute accurately, which for the most part never happened because we were a player short for most of the first half.

“Conditions also made it difficult. It was very wet and the players didn’t adapt their game accordingly. We were still trying to run the ball from everywhere, instead of punting it downfield and playing a territorial game.”

Bashford said the second half was better from a structural perspective but conceded that there was a significant amount of work to do before the Force match.

The Sharks were average against the Cheetahs last week, salvaging a draw with an injury-time penalty. While the results are relatively irrelevant in these warm-up matches, coaches hope to see their structures and patterns of play employed to good effect. The sense that one gets when speaking to the Sharks coaching staff is that the team have missed the mark in this area.

They still remain a good bet for a play-off berth, but they will have to quickly settle into the groove that saw them start the tournament so brilliantly in 2007 (their first defeat came in round seven to the Brumbies).

Meanwhile, Frans Steyn (foot), Frederic Michalak (calf) and JP Pietersen (foot) will undergo scans today to determine the extent of their injuries.

Steyn hurt in his foot in practice on Monday and failed to recover for last night’s match. JP Pietersen took over, but he too limped off with a foot injury, while Michalak felt a twinge in his calf and was substituted immediately.

However, none of the trio are expected to miss the Force game.

    Loffie: Losing Lions better team
    Super 14 | February 4th, 2008
The Lions produced an encouraging performance on Saturday and were the better of the two sides in Windhoek, says coach Loffie Eloff.

The Bulls beat the Lions 28-14 in front of 15 000 Namibians at the practice match, but Eloff told keo.co.za the Johannesburg franchise are exactly where they want to be at this stage of the pre-season.

“I’m really happy with the way things went on Saturday. The scoreline means nothing, even more so considering the Bulls scored two quick tries in the last seven minutes.

“I also brought on a lot of reserves for the final 20 minutes,” he said. “We had the better of them for most of the match, but we didn’t go out there to win, it was mainly about perfecting our own structures.”

Eloff spoke about playing clinical rugby in the build up to this fixture, and while he was pleased with the two tries scored by centre Jaco Pretorius, he admitted the Lions are by no means the finished product. The management will aim to work out the flaws in the next two weeks before they meet the Cheetahs on 16 February.

“The boys played phenomenally well and scored some brilliant tries,” Eloff said. “Jaco produced a fantastic individual performance, but those tries were also created by the men around him. I think we could have scored four more tries we were playing so well. Louis Strydom and Doppies la Grange both had strong games.”

The Lions B side lost to the Blue Bulls Vodacom Cup team last Thursday, but Eloff again dismissed this result in favour of the performance. Wednesday sees the Lions front the Sharks, who managed to draw with the Cheetahs last Friday despite missing a host of first-choice players.

“Wednesday will see the same approach as in the first two games,” said Eloff. “We’re not bothering to kick for posts and so on, it’s all about getting the guys match fit ahead of the Super 14.

“I know these matches are against our traditional rivals but I’m not going to be stupid in the management of my players. The aim is to have given everybody a run in two games by the end of Wednesday.”

Captain Ernst Joubert (back) and Willem Alberts (knee) are carrying injuries and will go for more tests on Monday. Eloff said the initial feeling was that it’s nothing serious, and though they may miss the Durban match they should be ready to face the Cheetahs. Joe van Niekerk (back) is also due to make his comeback in Bloemfontein.

Ek check net gou my antwoorde, sê die blondine.

The Bulls are not losing any sleep over their highly anticipated Super 14 opening clash against the Stormers next week in Cape Town.

Billed as the clash of the weekend, the traditional north versus south derby between the old foes has done little to rattle the Bulls camp with talk at Loftus Versfeld more about the other 14 games (semi-final and final included) after the Stormers clash.

Bulls captain Fourie du Preez has been quick to water down suggestions that the Bulls have their focus firmly fixed on beating the Stormers. Rather, he said, the team were intent on winning all their games, with a place in the semi-finals key in successfully defending their title.

"The Super 14 is not about one game, it is about 15 games and that is where our focus lies.

'All our focus can't be on one game'
"The north versus south game will always be big but people have to realise that the competition is played over 16 weeks.

"Maybe certain people are looking too much into the first game of the competition.

"All our focus can't be on one game," said Du Preez.

Du Preez, though, conceded that even though their ultimate target was to reach the semi-finals and hopefully the final, they would be assessing themselves on a weekly basis.

"Every game is important, every game is going to be tough. We have to take things game by game and week by week," said Du Preez.

The coastal side have taken a battering from their Pretoria counterparts in recent seasons.

In fact, the Stormers have not beaten the Bulls over the past three years of Super rugby with the Bulls having scored a record 75-14 victory in the 2005 Super 12.

Last year the Bulls beat the Stormers 49-12 at Loftus and in 2006 beat them 43-10 at Newlands.

But Du Preez is not a man who reads too much into statistics.

    Ackers trek Kaap toe

    Stephen Nell

Kaapstad.

The pressure of the impending Super 14 season is starting to tell at Loftus Versfeld as the Bulls put the final touches to their preparations for the highly anticipated opening match against the Stormers in Cape Town next week.

The Bulls have developed into one of the most powerful teams in Super rugby primarily due to their ruthless and abrasive forwards.

But the Bulls, last week, saw fit to re-enforce their scrum work and roped in the experience and knowledge of former Springbok and Bulls prop Marius Hurter.

Hurter conducted a few scrumming sessions with the Bulls pack which will be under pressure this season without the talents of their former leader Victor Matfield in the second row and hooker Gary Botha.

As it stands, Hurter will not conduct any more sessions with the Bulls as he is actually contracted to the Lions - although not for their Super 14 campaign. (WTF???)

“He was here last week just helping us with the scrums. His input was really valuable as he is one of those experienced players who has played at the highest level,” said Bulls forwards coach Pote Human.

Hurter’s presence at Loftus may have only been for a few sessions but Human conceded that every bit of assistance for the Bulls would be valuable as every game they play in the Super 14 will feel like a final.

Human believes that all the teams in the competition will target the Bulls and that their first big test will be to overcome the Stormers in their own backyard next weekend.

“The Stormers are always difficult to beat at Newlands. With Rassie Erasmus there, they will want to be physical and they have big players to play that type of game,” said Human.

“I believe we will be ready and it is going to be a great battle up front. We know that all of the teams will be coming for the Bulls and every match we play is going to be like a final. Our first final is next week.”

Human expressed his satisfaction with how the traditionally one dimensional Bulls forwards have quickly adapted to the new laws and that there is a significant improvement in their play since their first warm-up match against Boland two weeks ago.

“I was not that happy after the Boland game but the guys really put on good show against the Lions in Windhoek last week.

“We are coping but the ball is staying in play longer and we will see next week how far we have come.

“Our big forwards will have to adapt and get around the park quicker.

“There is a definite upward curve in our play. Everybody is looking forward to it. I believe that we will surprise a lot of teams,” said Human.
