Rocco to the rescue
Posted on Saturday, March 08, 2008 - 19:30
The Vodacom Blue Bulls' wing Rocco Jansen scored the winning try in the last minute to clinch a hard fought 35-33 victory over the Elephants in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

The Bulls were leading 20-6 at halftime but the home team managed to fight back in the second half to make the score 20-all and with less than 10 minutes to go the score was 28-all.

The Elephants scored what seemed to be the winning try in the very last part of the second half but they missed the conversion (score 33-28 for Elephants) and that inspired the Bulls to pull of a win like the Super 14 team did in 2007's final against the Sharks.

Jansen dived over after brilliant handling from his inside backs to make the score 33-all in the 80th minute and the young flyhalf Francois Brummer kicked the conversion to seal the win for Nico Serfontein's team.

Serfontein said they played some good rugby initially but he wasn't pleased with the way the team played in the middle part of the game.

"At first we were playing with the wind behind us, but we did not use it as much as we could have. We went to sleep in the middle part of the match and I sensed that we lost focus and concentration but the team showed great character in the end to pull the game through."

The Blue Bulls was disrupted quite a bit by the Vodacom Bulls because after Zane Kircher and Bakkies Botha were cited on Friday night Tiger Mangweni and Bandise Maku had to fly back to Johannesburg in case one of Botha or Kirchner received a heavy sentence.

That meant Brett Sharman and Burton Francis flew to Port Elizabeth on Saturday morning to replace Maku and Mangweni, but the end result is that the Blue Bulls are on top of the North Section log thanks to a gutsy performance by a team consisting of 14 under 21 players.

The forwards' coach Denzil Frans said Fudge Mabeta did some good work in the lineouts but the team struggled in the scrums after Richard Bands had to leave the field. Bands left the field in the 25th minute with a shoulder injury and that definitely did not help the young team.

Serfontein said they learned two valuable lessons from the game because after a win like this the youngsters know and they believe they can win under difficult circumstances.

"The team learned that they must fight with vigor till the last minute and we learned again that we should not play outside our structures. A team should stick to what they do best and we almost lost the game because we tried some stuff that wasn't in our game plan."

This win was the result of a solid team effort but individually guys like Brummer, Jansen, John Mametsa and Burton Francis, who came on as a replacement, will be very happy with their performance.

Skitterende wen Sharks! Baie geluk! Speel baie beter rugby sonder julle vet geriatrics?

Nice win for your boys last night, too!

Must say, my nerves are shot after that - was listening on the radio as the game wasn't broadcast over here..

LB, don't you think that Adi is better as a super-sub?
And I think we are still a quality lock short.

Geluk Bulle, Stormers en sharks. Cheetahs, my hart bloei vir julle.

what happened to the "mametsa and bands to slaughter ep" depth at bulls is worryingly pathetic
Posted by WP!!!! (Uitenhage) on Sunday, March 09, 2008 - 09:40
the first side is looking better now tho, although lions were pathetic. Its a good win before the tour. Nice confidence booster. To the stormers, you made me proud. What beautifull tries! If they were more clinical then boy it would've been 50 plus

WP!!! Your opinion will not respected, nor will anything else you say? So, Go away, please!

More Ligblou Baron man jy is 'n wyse man, stem saam met jou oor die ref van gisteraand, net jammer die sharkies het steeds weggekom met 'n hele paar vorentoe aangee's wat ek dink die lyn regters moes optel eintlik, maar nou ja stem die ref het hom uitstekend gedra, O shit oor willie ...oos.

Naas is ook 'n wyse man....

Mens!

Goeie game, Western Force!

Force gaan die beste Aussie span wees die jaar!

Jammer om die sharks in hulle akwarium terug te bring aarde toe, Top of the log vir 'n hele dag.... HA HA
Posted by bullsdaisy (Pretoria) on Sunday, March 09, 2008 - 13:57
Posted by bullsdaisy (Pretoria) on Sunday, March 09, 2008 - 13:59

LB, perhaps you are right about Steyn - he has a lot of potential, but needs to learn about decision-making..
On behalf of all loyal sharks supporters, thank you to all those who congratulated the sharks - good sportsmanship; same for those of us that wish the bulls well on their win.
Crusaders are definitely the top team at the moment - I'll settle for second on the log this early in the competition!!

Yip, this S/14 is going to be difficult to predict anything; maybe things will normalize towards the end rounds? Let's wait and see..........
