Building a new era
We are in the process of building players for a new era of Blue Bulls rugby highlights. This is what I said when I took over the position as coach of the Mobil Blue Bulls team.

And we are well on our way of achieving our goals.

There are two ways to get a winning team you can either buy one or build one. The Blue Bulls did not have the financial resources to buy all the rugby stars.

We decided to buy the best young players in the country and build them and train them to become the Springboks and rugby heroes of the future, and today we are sitting with heroes like Pedrie Wannenburg, Bakkies Botha, Danie Coetzee, Victor Matfield to name only a few.

Derick Hougaard is probably the best example of the Blue Bulls benefiting from our youth development policy. Derick is only 20 years old. We identified him as one of the future Springboks when he was playing High School Craven week. With his temperament and talent he is a very positive contribution to Blue Bulls as well as South African rugby.

I want to assure our supporters that we will do everything in our power to keep the young players in Blue Bulls Country.

Further, I would like to thank our supporters for their support and loyalty during the 2002 Currie Cup season. It was a very exciting and challenging season consisting of hard work, focus and determination.

The season ended on an incredible high when we won the Currie Cup!

During all our matches, the Blue Bulls have shown one characteristic that I am most proud of and this is character. They have played with passion and pride.

Even in the tough games they managed to pull through in the end got the win on the table and this is what its all about at the end of the day.

The Blue Bulls play for each other and for the honor of pulling the legendary Blue jersey over their heads. We always keep our feet on the ground and will not allow ourselves to get swept away by all the excitement and the fact that we are the defending champs!

The side is still growing and learning with every game and it is certainly an honor and privilege to see the young Blue Bulls side maturing into a serious Currie Cup contender.

As we enter the new Currie Cup season the Blue Bulls will remain focused on our game. It is important for the team to keep the tempo up and concentrate on playing positive, exciting rugby.

We are aware of the physical and mental challenges of the games in the Currie Cup. But we are prepared to go out and play with true Blue Bulls pride. Most of all we will strive to play winning rugby.
