We need to be a unit
The Blue Bulls had one characteristic that helped them win the Currie Cup in 2002 Ė they were a unit. They played for each other and for the benefit of the team as a whole and not the individual.

This will certainly again be one of the focus points for the 2003 Currie Cup squad. A team is as strong as its weakest link, therefore I donít want the players to feel insecure in their positions. They need to be confident. I will always do what is best for the team and that means to send the best-prepared team possible on the field.

Although there are a lot of youngsters in our Currie Cup squad, there are still no excuses. I know that some of the players are inexperienced, but they must come through and prove that they are good enough to play at this level. If these young players come through, we will have extreme depth for the 2004 season.

The Mobil Blue Bulls players are definitely players with character, enthusiasm, endurance and most of all passion. You cannot coach character to anyone Ė you either have it or you donít. I believe that a team with character is a winning team. Itís the team who can always come back and get the points on the scoreboard, regardless of the situation or the pressure.

Talking about pressure I can say that there is always pressure from the media and the public, we also put a lot of pressure on ourselves. By being the Currie Cup champs the pressure is more positive than last year, but we still want to play high impact, exciting and winning rugby, especially for the sake of our supporters and that pressure will never change.

It is our responsibility as professional rugby players and coaches to provide the public with world-class rugby entertainment.

Seven of our players who were in the Currie Cup winning team of 2002 are now with the Springboks. Jaco van der Westhuyzen, also selected for the Sprinbok team, is injured and we lost Dries Scholtz.

As a result, we are again being judged as one of the underdogs but we will go out and play each game with typical Blue Bulls pride.

This is going to be a very difficult Currie Cup for all the teams involved. There are just too many factors and obstacles. I donít think there will be a front-runner in the series. Each one of the teams will go through a crisis at some stage of the series and the defining factor will be how the team handles and manages the crisis.

To play all the strong sides twice will be extremely challenging, both mentally and physically. It will be of the utmost importance for the coaches to be able to rotate players to prevent serious injuries and mental exhaustion. Again, I want to stress that the teams with character will come through in the end.

I think there are three important factors that will determine the winning teams. 1) Consistency and depth. 2) Character and being able to win the away-games. 3) Must be able to come back after theyíve lost a game and win the next one.

To coach the Mobil Blue Bulls in another ABSA Currie Cup challenge is an honour and it will be our priority to play each game with passion and fighting spirit and to make our supporters proud.
