Vodacom Blue Bulls looking for momentum ahead of semis

The Vodacom Blue Bulls have secured at least a fourth place finish in the Absa Currie Cup competition due to some fortunate results elsewhere and will now be looking to get some momentum in their play with five Springboks starting for the first time this season.

They take on Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday, with the knowledge that a win will move them to third on the log, a position that will be finalised a couple of hours later when Western Province host the Sharks in Cape Town.

According to rugby365.com, Griquas coach Dawie Theron hopes his battered charges can find it in them to get up for one more big Bull-fight in the Currie Cup.

The Griquas coach is under no illusion as to just how tall an order it will be to overcome the start-studded visiting outfit - who welcomed back a ghost of Springbok players this week. "I truly hope the [Griquas] players will be up for it mentally," Theron told rugby365.com, when asked about facing a near full-strength Bulls team chasing home ground advantage in the play-offs.

His own team, will be playing for "pride" only. "I trust the players still have the hunger to win a big one," Theron said, adding: "I see this as the first game of our new season... the 2011 season."

He admitted that it will be a charged-up Bulls side arriving in Kimberley "However, this is a home game for us and we have to perform on our home turf," he said, adding that their narrow (one-point) defeat to the Bulls at Loftus almost two months ago was a loss that "really hurt".

"But there is no doubt it will be a very different Bulls team that will arrive this week and we will have to produce our 'A-Game'," he said. The Bulls have also made no secret of the fact that they want to take the full five points away from Kimberley.

"Firstly, we need to go win that game as we are still not in a semifinal," said Bulls captain Victor Matfield - one of a host of Bok stars recalled to the Bulls line-up ahead of this weekend. "It's a very important game for us... It's never easy in Kimberley, so it's going to be tough and we will have to be at our best."

rugby365.com Prediction: As Griquas coach Dawie Theron said, you should not be under any illusion as to the goals of the Blue Bulls. A comprehensive win and five points are the minimum requirement. While Griquas have the potential to cause an upset, the Bulls appear to have far too much class... not to mention the play-off factor. This should be a comfortable Blue Bulls victory - 15 points at least.

The teams:

Griquas: 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Rocco Jansen, 13 Jean Stemmet, 12 Barry Geel, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Naas Olivier (captain), 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Leon Karemaker, 7 Wesley Wilkins, 6 Justin Downey, 5 Cecil Kemp, 4 Frikkie Spies, 3 Jean Botha, 2 Rayno Barnes, 1 Steph Roberts. Replacements: 16 Simon Westraadt, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Edwin Hewitt, 19 Gerhard Human, 20 Marnus Hugo, 21 Wilmaure Louw, 22 Rudi Vogt.

4. I think te Bulls still have something top play for today. If we beat Griquas with full points and Province loose, it will mean that we get a semi in Bloem, rather than in Durban. If Province beat the Sharks then next week, they will play the final at Loftus.

Perfect.

Ons kon top of the log gewees het.

So wat maak hy nou weer hier?

Seker weer n aambei of iets wat pla.

14. Little Blue Bull moenie bekommer nie, dieselfde het amper met my gebeur.

Ek vermoed steggies se seisoen is verby!
Posted by FRANNABUL (Centurion) Saturday, October 09, 2010 - 20:57

Posted by bendiebul Saturday, October 09, 2010 - 21:02

25. Sharks were beaten:

1) They didn't have to play for anything but momentum
2) They were beaten at the breakdown and had too many turnovers
3) They couldn't handle the pressure and made too many handling mistakes
4) They tried to play a running game and not the territorial game. Jac Fourie has made a huge difference in WP defence. He is the pinnacle man.
5) Prior to halftime WP scored a try taking the score away to 20-7

Keegan Daniel did not play and that made a huge difference. They will be very competitive next week against the Bulls in Durban - which is not a happy hunting ground for the Bulls. Expect a huge game.

The Bulls looked awesome for 60 minutes of the match and the class showed. Kaplan did not do us a favour with Griquas' negative play at the breakdowns and Danie Rossouw did not fare well at the scrums. I thought Danie's handling was a bit rusty, although he was everywhere. With knocks like that we will get hammered against a better side and come the semifinal and final that will be lost oppertunities that you lament afterwards. He and Hougaard struggled a bit as a combination. Although I understand Ludeke's selection, I just wonder if it is not going to cost the Bulls? Surely Flip vd Merwe cannot be left out.

Also, Griquas' weak defence in the midfield made it easy for Wynand. Zane Kirchner had a killer and the pack just went forward the whole time. The tries were great and Jaco vd West. is regaining his confidence.

26. Bloukreef,

Agree on most of your comments:

First the Sharks :Both Rory K and McCloud were equally useless whilst Januarie had his best game in 2010.

Rhodes was useless at no 7, he will be left out in favour of Alberts. Do they leave out either Botes or Kanko for Keegan? They will be crazy to leave out Botes. That cost them big time in our super14 game in 2009.

I also dont think they know yet who to play at no.10

Now the Bulls. Unfortunately, with the big Cheetahs win on Friday the chance of overtaking them was zero and whether we ended up 3rd or 4th on the log was entirely out of our hands. It was obviously decided to use the match to re-integrate the Boks. On that score alone, I thought this was a success.
Bakkies and Wynand did better than Morne, Victor and Pakslae, but all in all everybody did well.
In addition there seemed to be no injuries(maybe Hougie?) We also managed to give every bench player a run on the field.
A lot of bloggers are concerned about our loosehead and I agree Dean aint Gurthro but it was really only early on, where Kaplan was being particularly fussy about his early engagement after the abnormally long "Pause!"
Both Griquas early tries came through J v d W channel but I am not entirely sure who is at fault here. Each time Jaco seemed to have more than one attacker to deal with.
At last it looked like Shadow was looking for work at last.
Ever since Zane has stopped kicking up and unders (a few games now) he looks far more threatening

Soms wonder ek.
