Stegmann enjoying test match rugby

When he arrives for our interview, Deon Stegmann reverts to type and does the openside flank thing. Soon after he lays his eyes on the Springbok media guide, he starts foraging for his profile, writes Simnikiwe Xabanisa in the Sunday Times.

But a bit like most of his work at the rucks, the exercise is like attempting to find a needle in a haystack because his name is not in the booklet, given that he was a late inclusion to the party. Where you will find Stegmann's name, though, is in the Springbok starting line-up, which can only be described as the rise of the season.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls flanker thought his dream had been extinguished when he was excluded from the touring group named after the Currie Cup final. Having stayed on in Pretoria for two weeks to train by himself after being named in the training squad that assembled after the Currie Cup semifinals, he finally decided to head for the family farm the Sunday after the final.

"Then I received a call on Monday morning. At first they told me they were concerned because they had some injuries, then they called me two hours later to say I must join the squad. I was at my parents' farm in Cradock, so I had to jump on a plane and go to Joburg."

Less than a fortnight later, Stegmann has already played two Tests, having leapfrogged other flankers in the squad to start in the fetching role.

To some this might point to the eccentricities of Springbok coach Peter de Villiers's selection policies. But the 24-year-old's debut against Ireland turned what appeared an illogical choice into an inspired one.

There was genuine admiration in Juan Smith's voice when he was discussing how well his new back-row partner slowed down the opposition's ball. And to cap it all, Stegmann, the shortest forward on the field at 1.81m, also stole lineout ball.

"It wasn't a steal," he says with cheeky pride. "It was an option. That was the second lineout ball I've ever won, but jeez, it was a good take!"

What makes Stegmann's successful debut more remarkable is how little rugby he'd played before that game in Dublin: "It was my first game back after 20 minutes for the Bulls in the semifinal against the Sharks. Before that I hadn't played for about 12 weeks because of my hamstring injury.

"I didn't play a lot of rugby in the build-up, but I'm happy with the debut, it's definitely something to build on." Most players might have felt a little awkward getting a magiccarpet ride from Cradock to the Bok starting XV, not so Stegmann.

"I don't really want to see it like that," he says. "I must see being here as an opportunity, try to fulfil my role within the team, and remember to play the same game that brought me here."

Not that he wasn't nervous: "It's a new system and is quite different to what I'm used to and there are a lot of players I haven't played with before. Luckily I know quite a lot of the senior guys so that's helped."

Stegmann's sporting background also appears to have been readying him for that seamless debut.

There's his playing background, which started with him representing the Grey College First XV in the same loose-trio as Richardt Strauss and Heinrich Brussow (Stegmann was the No8), with Frans Steyn at flyhalf.

There was his sprinting career, which saw him record 10.9sec for the 100m in 2003 (although he thinks his speedy days are behind him after his hamstring injury).

Then there was the Craven Week representation, followed by the SA Schools cap, playing for the Bulls' victorious under-19 and under-21 sides.

Playing for the Bulls teams that won the 2009 Currie Cup and the last two Super 14 titles meant Test rugby wasn't going to faze him: "Playing in those big matches definitely helps you fit into the international arena."

Stegmann credits Wikus van Heerden with being a significant influence.

"In my first Super 14 season he was my flank-mate," he explains.

"He'd won the World Cup the year before and helped keep me calm. I also learnt a lot of short-cuts from him, so he helped me a lot."

The player the youngster has modelled himself on goes a long way towards explaining him and his aspirations: "Ruben Kruger was also at Grey College, moved to the Blue Bulls and was one of the greatest Springbok loose-forwards ever.

"He seemed to be a great guy on and off the pitch. I didn't get to meet him before he died, but I followed him quite intently and liked what I saw."

1. Soos die BULLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. Steggies doen goed . Baie bly vir hom . Spies was uitstekend , so ook Juan Smit.

4. Relax Steggies...... Jy is, uiteindelik, waar jy hoort!!!

Ek sal graag wil he so min as moontlik aan die span verander word teen Skotland, ons kontinieteit is nog nie daar. Willem Alberts moet aangehou gebruik word as impak speller.

Vir 65 minute was die Bokke power;
- Swak verdediging
- Bal weg skop onnodig
- Stadige Bal

Kom Bokkke maak reg!!!!

Selfs Aplon verdedig beter as hy.
Hoop Shadow kry n call-up in Bjorn se plek.

7. With pierre spies already looking in form i think it will be hard to drop him now.

He got man of the match and i bet you he is peaking at the right time for the england game.

Believe me it will be hard to drop him or even rest him i.

That means with alberts coming in ryan kankowski may not even make the world cup squad..................

This is the loose trio i want to se ei against scotland

6.Alberts
7.Juan Smith
8.Pierre Spies

I know it's scotland but judging by the way victor and the bok management are heading into this game they are not taking any chances...............

Of verstaan ek dalk die situasie nie so lekker nie?

9. My indrukke oor saterdag:
1. Ons agterlyn was pateties.
4. Hougaard moet bo Ruaan begin as dit droog is
5. Pierre Spies speel uiteindelik weer beter.
6. Willem Alberts was 'n monster.
7. Bismarck moet net vervang word as hy beseer is. Hy is ons beste forward.

11. Little Blue Bull

Maku is weg.

12. Springboks Chiliboy Ralepelle and Bjorn Basson are returning home from South Africa’s tour of Britain and Ireland having returned positive samples for a banned stimulant following the test against Ireland on November 6.

13. Guys for the sake of it i hope bjorn does not get a long ban.......this could mess up our plans for the super 15 next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That means Zane Botha and Henri Bantjies have to step up now i am sick and tired of this whole chilliboy saga injuries ect now doping i give up...............
Posted by Muzi (Johannesburg) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 14:56
14. Guys i think we may need to go buy a good back up hooker for gary zane botha and bantjies are not yet ready for super 15 rugby.
Posted by Muzi (Johannesburg) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 14:58
15. Muzi, I have to disagre with you re Bjorn. IF he is guilty I think he should get a very lengthy ban - I do not feel that the use of stimulants should ever be punished with a mere slap on the wrist. Not a very auspicious start to his BB-career.
Posted by Little Blue Bull ((2011 - die jaar van die BUL)) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 15:02
Johan Goosen is vir so iets soos 3 maande geskors.

Posted by Stapper (Pretoria) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 15:13

Posted by Stapper (Pretoria) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 15:16

"American swimmer Sean Mahoney has been slapped with a six-month suspension after testing positive for a banned drug, the US Anti-Doping Agency announced on Friday.
The 22-year-old Mahoney, who is a rising star on the USA swimming scene, tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine, widely used a nasal decongestant but also found in recreational drugs. "

19. Earlier on Monday however, Goosen appeared before a SARU judiciary committee and was found guilty.

It is believed that Goosen unknowingly took the stimulant. Apparently the use of PVM supplements was made available for the players at Grey College, and Goosen continued using them and the substance was contained within the supplement.

Whilst the stimulant has not been named, it is believed to have been on WADA’s lists of banned substances, taken off it, and reintroduced!
Posted by Stapper (Pretoria) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 15:52
20. Team doctor Craig Roberts confirmed that both players were on medication for flu symptoms, but he stressed that the medication that they were on has been in use for a long time without there being any problems.

“In terms of the IRB doping regulations the sanctions are less severe for this particular substance, it is one of those substances everyone appears to be having a bit of difficulty deciding about,” said Roberts.

Posted by Stapper (Pretoria) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 16:02
22. Die medisie moet afgedank word. Waarvoor word hulle betaal!!!????
Posted by NETBLOU (Centurion) Monday, November 15, 2010 - 16:28
23. "The sentence for a non-specified substance is a two year ban as prescribed by the World Anti Doping Agency [WADA], but from January methylhexaneamine will be a on the list of classified illegal substances, which will mean lesser sentences."
Posted by Stapper (Pretoria) Tuesday, November 16, 2010 - 06:11

Posted by bloubulblog (pretoria) Tuesday, November 16, 2010 - 07:47
25. Bomskok,

Posted by bloubulblog (pretoria) Tuesday, November 16, 2010 - 07:49
