Strauss back for Vodacom Bulls
Vodacom Bulls coach Nollis Marais named Adriaan Strauss as captain of his team to play the Sunwolves at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
Strauss was rested in last weekend’s Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Jaguares in Buenos Aires, but is back to lead the team in what has become a must-win match for the home side if they are to keep alive an outside chance into the competition play-offs.
The return of Strauss, in place of Bandise Maku, comes in an overhaul of the front row from the team that delivered a disappointing result in Argentina.
Prop Pierre Schoeman will start at loosehead in place of injured Lizo Gqoboko while Werner Kruger will start at tighthead in place of Marcel van der Merwe. Schoeman’s seven appearances thus far in the competition all came as impact player.
The inclusion of Werner Kruger will see the last appearance at Loftus Versfeld of the stalwart, who played 118 times for the Vodacom Bulls.
The loose trio combination is also new. Renaldo Bothma starts at no8, with Jannes Kirsten and Lappies Labuschagne the flankers.
In the backs, Jesse Kriel starts at fullback, with Dries Swanepoel pairing up with Burger Odendaal in the midfield. Piet van Zyl also returns to the scrumhalf starting berth.
On the bench, Nqoba Mxoli will make his Vodacom Bulls and Super Rugby debut if he takes to the field.
“We all know the deal,” Marais said.
“We have to win and win well if we want to have any chance. And even then it could not be enough. So we owe it to ourselves and our fans to give it our best and deliver a performance they and we can be proud of,” said Marais.
Strauss warned against the Sunwolves.
“They have shown that they play 80 minutes and we had to dig deep last time when we played them away. That said, we owe our fans at home something positive. The season did not always smile upon us, but we are still in the race and that is the focus for the weekend.”
The team (with Super caps) is: Jesse Kriel (29), Travis Ismaiel (15), Burger Odendaal (16), Dries Swanepoel (5), Jamba Ulengo (8), Francois Brummer (18), Piet van Zyl (66), Renaldo Bothma (16), Jannes Kirsten (13), Lappies Labuschagne (48), Jason Jenkins (11), Marvin Orie (8), Werner Kruger (118), Adriaan Strauss (c, 130), Pierre Schoeman (7).

  2. gravatar Gazza says:
My beloved Bulls are in such a shambles at the moment, we can't even correctly announce starting 15...

I'm assuming Deon Stegmann is on the bench and that either Hanro Liebenberg or Grant Hattingh will be on the bench.
  3. gravatar Bloukaap says:
Lyk my dis al hoe ons gaan wen - kroek so bietjie met te veel manne id lynstaan
  4. gravatar Bulperd says:
Hatting cover slot so net 2 losvoorspelers op bank
  5. Pappa Blue says:
  6. gravatar nitronic says:
who cares, baie beter dinge om te doen as on die bulle te kyk.

  7. gravatar Gazza says:
C'mon Nitronic, I know there's quite a bit to be negative about, but at least here's positive changes to the team.

It's probably best if this team doesn't qualify, but I'm happy wit Jesse returning to fullback and Dries given a start at 12. That has to be the centre combination for the CC and I think Jesse should consider fullback as a permanent position.

What the Bulls need for next season is a very good flyhalf to backup Handre Pollard and a scrummie. Is Hougie ever coming back or has he moved on from the Bulls? It's scary how our season was based around Pollard as the others (and I do like Schoeman, but he seems very inconsistent) are just not taking control...

I hope Nollis coaches the CC 'proper' as well as he needs to grow with this squad...

It's a blessing that the Bulls wont supply much Boks this year, so maybe these guys can play in the CC and actually try to win the damn thing to get a bit of belief back...

Looking onto next year, I believe this team will further improve their offloading and running game and I hope that the squad will look something like this...

    1. Nyakene
    2. Strauss (c)
    3. Jacobie Adriaanse
    4. Lood
    5. RG
    6. Roelof Smit
    7.J Potgieter
    8. A Botha
    9. Piet van Zyl ( a better scrummie if we can)
    10. Pollard
    11. Jamba
    12. Jan
    13. Dries
    14. Ismaeil
    15. Jesse

    16. Lizo
    17. Jaco Visagie )we need a better backup hooker as well - Maybe Marutulle from the Kings)
    18. Swanepoel
    19. Jenkins
    20. Bothma
    21. Paige (again... another scrummie)
    22. Schoeman (just invest in him. Let him strart the entire CC)
    23. Warick Gelant

There's still Hanro Liebenberg, Jannes Kirsten, Burger Odendaal and Dan Kriel so that's why I believe (or maybe hope) that they get a bit of belief going, embrace their talent and practice their skills and we could actually be there and there abouts...

Anyways that's just my 2 cents...

  8. Weskus says:
What I would like to know is why so few players from the Bulls school structures are coming through. I can't believe that rugby is becoming a dying sport in Pretoria. I do get that black rugby is not big in Pretoria and Limpopo and therefore Boland and Border were included in the partnership. Maybe someone could tell me the number of teen players in the Pretoria.
  9. gravatar Bulperd says:
Gelant is a very good player so I don't know how they will allow Jesse to play every game fullback with the politic in the game. What going to happen they will again move Jesse to centre and destroy his future to play for the Boks as they done with Hougaardt on the wing
  10. gravatar Blouland says:
Gazza, goed gestel.

Baie goeie nuus oor Kriel.

Hoop werklik iets verander baie vinnig.

  13. gravatar Loftus says:
Well, Barend, it is as clear as daylight that the Bulls don't have a Director of rugby for the last 5 years.
Just a shame everyone can see it , except you, Barend. Lood is an excellent player, but do we really need him? More than decent coaches? How is the Currie cup going under that clown of a coach , who we all warned you about before the season?
  14. gravatar Dylan says:
  15. gravatar Barries says:
    Hi Dylan,

Nqoba Mxoli speel sedert 2013sy rugby by die Bulle. Hy is n vaskop stut.
