The Vodacom Blue Bulls scored an impressive 45-26 win over DHL Western Province at Loftus Versfeld on Friday in the opening match of the Currie Cup Premier Division.
Flyhalf Tian Schoeman kicked 15 points as the Vodacom Blue Bulls outscored DHL Western Province six tries to four in their 45-26 Currie Cup win at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening.
Both sides tried to assert their dominance early on but it was the home team who turned their opportunities into points as they scored three tries in the first half.
Scrumhalf Piet van Zyl crossed the white wash first after prop Pierre Schoeman turned over the ball. Locks Jason Jenkins and Marvin Orie followed in the 32nd and 34th minute as the Blue Bulls continued their innovative attack. Schoeman converted all three tries to give the Blue Bulls a 24-0 halftime lead.
The Blue Bulls continued their form in the early stages of the second half as wingers Jade Stighling and Jamba Ulengo scored five pointers.
Western Province eventually got on the scoreboard courtesy of replacement centre Johnny Kotze in the 62nd minute and his try ignited a great period of play for the visitors as wing Leolin Zas, centre Huw Jones and fullback Scott van Breda all scored. Replacement flyhalf Brandon Thomson converted three tries.
Fullback Bjorn Basson had the final say of the match as the Blue Bulls scored their sixth try at the death to start their Currie Cup campaign with a 45-26 win.
