Kotze to join Vodacom Bulls

The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd on Thursday confirmed the signing of Johnny Kotze till the end of October 2018.
The elusive try-scoring centre is currently playing for the DHL Western Province and represented DHL Stormers in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition in the last couple of seasons.

The BBC also confirmed contract extensions to a number of players. Current Vodacom Bulls stars, lock RG Snyman and lock forward Jannes Kirsten signed on till 2018 and 2019 respectively. Highly rated tighthead prop Martin Dreyer also agreed to stay in Pretoria till the end of the 2017 Vodacom Super Rugby season. Dreyer, who played for the DHL Stormers in 2016, made his provincial debut for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in 2016 and impressed all.

The Blue Bulls Company's High Performance Manager, Xander Janse van Rensburg, also confirmed the signing of a number of junior players into senior contracts. Divan Rossouw, who debuted for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup this year and Junior Springboks Franco Naude and Jan-Henning Campher will all be available till the end of the 2018 season.

Naude formed a formidable partnership with fellow Junior Bok and Blue Bulls player, JT Jackson, this year and Janse van Rensburg is excited about their futures.

"We are really lucky to get an exciting and experienced player like Johnny Kotze into the squad, as it will no doubt extend our depth in the midfield. He brings some versatility and unpredictability to the party. That said, we predict a bright future for Franco and JT, who have already showed that they have an appetite for hard work and winning titles. They work well together as a combination as well and they will learn a lot from the senior guys like Jan Serfontein, Burger Odendaal and Dries Swanepoel. In fact, they will keep everyone on their toes," Janse van Rensburg said.

"It is also great to have RG and Jannes staying on. They are clearly destined for greater things and it is great to know that they will keep on showing their immense talents in our squad."

(6) Kotze to join Vodacom Bulls

Johnny Kotze is a very talented rugby player and obviously centre is the one position where injuries are most prone to happen.

But I just wonder what the effect will be on JesseKriel's career? The Bok coaches play hima t outside centre but Jesse has shown his best hand at 15 where he also starred for the Bulls. In my opinion his best position. Obviously the Bulls Rather see Odendaal and Swanepoel (our best combo) and Serfontein and Kotze as the future. Someone will have to go. Dan Kriel? JT Jackson?

Kotze can also play on the wing but the Bulls need to keep their Transformation numbers in mind.

At full back we have Jesse, Galant, Mathews and Beyers.

But I wonder about the scrumhalf and flyhalf positions. We need a general there and there is little feedback on Pollard's injury. This year our nrs. 10 did not perform consistently well.

Up front I think the Bulls have grown into a tough unit and made a few good signings on tight head. Gary Botha and Anton leonard have done wonders with our scrummaging this year and youngsters like RG and Jenkins have both stood out. Togehter with Lood we will have a very strong lock department.

In the loose trio department we will have the services of Ronaldo Bothma and Jacques Potgieter. Both Potgieter and Jannes Kirsten can slot in at lock and nr. 7. We have good fetchers in Steenkamp and Roelof Smit.

So all in all - the Bulls are looking well stuffed for 2017.

As for the remaining season. I am a little bit worried about our long resting period. Would love to see that we can beat WP at Loftus with their Bok stars. But we will have to be fresh and determined. WP without their locks is no competition.

Very difficult to point out whether Kriel or Kotze is the best bet. Kotze performed well during the Super rugby where as Kriel hasnt had the chance yet to prove himself. Kriel needs still time to develop. He will not find it easy with loads of good centres at the WP. I think the Cheetahs or Sharks would have been better options for him.

I dont kniw how kong jesse will stay in the system. SA coaches are doinng the same to him like they've done with Brent Russel and Francois Hougaard Francois Steyn and Johan Goossen
  6. gravatar spartacus says:
Kriel has been injured a few times while at the Bulls, but I am not sure how injury prone Kotze is. I just hope we don't have another Johann Sadie/jJJ Engelbrecht on our hands. With that in mind, thank you Daniel Kriel for your time at the Bulls and good luck with your future endevours!
