Loftus Versfeld played host to UP-Tuks' FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International season opener against Cape rivals Maties on Monday evening.
The men from Pretoria clinched a 13-9 win in the dying minutes of the match when U21 Blue Bulls flyhalf Tinus de Beer fought hard to break a few tackles and cross the try line. De Beer added a penalty while fellow Blue Bulls no.8 Chris Massyn scored UP-Tuks' first try of the match.
Massyn proved to be the rock of the UP-Tuks team on the day as his barnstorming runs and solid defensive effort saw him being named the Player that Rocks (man of the match).
Maties points were scored by Western Province pivot Ernst Stapelberg.
UP-Tuks have a bye next week before travelling to Port Elizabeth to face FNB Madibaz.
Scorers
UP-Tuks - Tries: Chris Massyn, Tinus de Beer; Penalty: De Beer.
Maties - Penalties: Ernst Stapelberg.
