Three great club matches highlights Carlton
Last Saturday was a good day for club rugby in Pretoria and the Carlton Leagues writes Johanna de Vos.An excellent game was played between Centurion and Tuks which ended in a draw. At the TUT Stadium there was a real battle between the home side and Oostelike Eagles which the latter won. Pretoria Police got the bogey off their back when they beat Rustenburg Impala in a friendly encounter at home.
Literally in the shadow of the Gauteng Railway line two of the top club sides in the Carlton Competition, Centurion and Tuks locked horns in a nail-biting game. The game ended in 36-36 draw. After the game residing referee Ben Crouse (one of the BBRU’s top referees) said he was impressed with the quality of the rugby played by both teams.
Although Tuks scored five tries to the three of Centurion, the home side had territorial advantage most of the time. This was definitely to their advantage when they had to kick for poles. Their forwards were very good where the students on the other hand had a dangerous back line. The three tries the backline scored were long distance tries. Tuks’ hooker kicker Jan Enslin succeeded with five of his six kicks.
Centurion again rested their top fly half Jean Grobler on the bench in view of the Under 21 National Competition which starts the 11th July. The Limpopo Blue Bulls u21 will be selected from the Carlton u20’s and u21’s. This decision somewhat backfired when their stand-in fly half Steven Moir missed three penalties. Inside centre Stanley Twiname, also a fly half, took over. He missed only one of his seven goal kicks.
The game between TUT and Oostelike Eagles was arbitrated by a visiting New Zealand referee. The last 25 minutes the lights went out (load shedding) but the referee decided play must continue. If it was a Cricket match the decision would have been “Bad light stops playâ€. TUT made a few changes to their team with promising results. They got a bonus point from losing within seven points. The Eagles went home satisfied with their five points.
Pretoria Police were very happy when they eventually beat the 2015 Community Cup Runners-up Rustenburg Impala 26-22. Four points were more than the one and two points they lost to Impala this year. They also outscored Impala four tries to three. Bobbies new hooker Robey Leibrandt got a double.
