Vodacom Blue Bulls ended their campaign on a high note as they demolished the Leopards 63-36 (half-time 42-24) in their SuperSport Rugby Challenge North Section match at Loftus Versfeld on Friday afternoon.
The match turned out to be a festival of tries as the Vodacom Blue Bulls dotted down nine tries while the Leopards’ five tries allowed them to walk away with a bonus point.
However, it was the boot of Leopards’ flyhalf Schalk Hugo that opened the scoring as he landed a penalty goal in the fifth minute.
The home team hit their straps four minutes later as hooker Werner Fourie surged over the chalk which was the start of a good run for the Vodacom Blue Bulls.
His efforts were followed by fullback Andrew Kota but the Potchefstroom men pulled back a try courtesy of fullback Chuinier van Rooyen before scrumhalf Lian du Toit, no.8 Muller Uys and Kota scored in the 22nd, 26th and 28th minute respectively.
Van Rooyen continued his fine form as he scored his second try of the afternoon with the Pretoria men cancelling it out moments later as prop Matthys Basson crashed over the whitewash.
Flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff converted all six conversion attempts but the Leopards were not done with the first half as they scored a converted try via no.8 Edmund Rheeder but this did not effect the scoreboard too much as the Vodacom Blue Bulls headed to the sheds with a 42-24 lead at the break.
The second half proved to be a much slower affair in terms of points scored with the home team picking up the first points of the second stanza as wing Jade Stighling touched down in the 50th minute with flank Roelof Smit following in his foot steps four minutes later.
The Leopards did not give up despite the mammoth gap on the scoreboard and outside centre Bradley Moolman was the man to score their bonus point try which Van Rooyen converted.
Replacement scrumhalf Theo Maree scored the Vodacom Blue Bulls’ ninth and final try in the 73rd minute before Rheeder brought the curtain down with his second try.
Scrumhalf Nkosana Mathaba could not convert the try which saw the Vodacom Blue Bulls registering a 63-36 win against their North West opponents.
